[Motd] ANN/motd 29-Aug-01ANN.lu
Posted on 29-Aug-2001 19:49 GMT by Christian Kemp0 comments
As you might have noticed, I restarted updates to ANN.lu a couple of days ago. Unfortunately, I'm not as active as a news researcher, so I'd appreciate more news submissions, both by users and companies, via the Add News Item page.

On a not entirely unrelated topic, as of September 1st 2001, I will once again be part of the active work force, since I will return to my former employer to work as a programmer. Read more below.

[Motd] ANN/motd : Work, bugfixes and poll script rewritesANN.lu

As a few might have noticed, I safely returned from my three-week trip from the United States. However, things will remain pretty busy in my life, since starting tomorrow, and for the next two weeks to come, I will return to my former fulltime job to help them out during the holiday season. On top of that, I will work at my freelance workplace on two evenings and on weekends, which leaves me with very little free time on my hands. So that people don't complain that I'm only complaining in these MOTD's (even when they can opt out), I fixed a few minor inconveniences in the display settings/cookies handling, and revised the poll script to finally show results in the new layout. Take a look and comment before this fully replaces the old version. Before wrapping this up, I'd like to thank everybody for keeping ANN more or less updated during the time I was away. Please keep it up. :)

Various connectivity problems prevented me from accessing the internet in the last few days and witnessing the graphical counter pass the magical 2 million mark. Now, the counter was never meant to do any scientific monitoring - no IP check, only works when the image is loaded, etc. - but nevertheless, it does provide an interesting insight into the development of ANN... while it took three and a half years to record the first million of visits, the second million just took about 14 months... That being said, I'm getting ready to drive to Monument Valley today, and should be back home in about a week.

[Motd] Impostor news and accusationsANN.lu
Posted on 20-Jul-2001 15:46 GMT by Christophe Decanini0 comments
I removed the latest posts that were accusing a company. Whatever is the company or the individual it should not happen on a news site. Some people could take this as true information (and some did). Christian allowed us having Unmoderated postings on the main page while he is away. I invite everyone to post AMIGA related real NEWS to make ANN better. Regards, Christophe.

After asking for advice and then announcing my decision to go back to school in September 2000, I am now happy to report that exam results are out and that I passed! This past year wasn't easy for me, in many aspects, but the outcome of the exam has considerably improved my future career prospects, and I'm happy. Now, I just have to decide what to do next: heading to university, or getting a job. I'll keep you all updated.

My exams are over, results won't be out until late June or early July though, so I can't say whether spending this entire year was useful or not. I realize I've got a lot of catching up to do over here. While visitor statistics seem to be stable, I'm hoping to build up on that, and get ANN on a few more screens.

Today was my second exam, a third one will be tomorrow and seven more will be in one week and a half. I'm trying to update whenever not too busy or tired. Normal operation should resume in mid-June. Meanwhile, I wouldn't mind having one or more additional moderators to post news on ANN. Please apply via email.
[Motd] "Add News" script didn't work for 2 daysANN.lu

I noticed this morning that the "Add News" script was broken, but didn't have the time to fix it right then, as I was already late. On closer investigation this afternoon, I found out that it probably stopped working two days ago, when I revised the layout code. The error was quickly found, and it should be working again now.

I reverted back to the old layout and dropped any MSIE-specific changes, since it seems impossible to cater for all variations of Amiga browsers spoofing as, but not supporting all aspects of, CSS2.

I re-activated the Notify service, all subscribers should now once again get a notification every time ANN is updated by me.

I added code to support cookies, enabling you to save your viewing preferences without messing with bookmarks. Optionally, you can also indicate your name and email address, which will then automatically be used if you want to add a comment. This should all be self-explanatory, just select your viewing preferences, activate "Save Cookies?" and hit "Change". You can, of course, also continue visiting ANN and change viewing preferences on the fly without setting cookies. Also notice that your privacy is fully protected, since these cookies are only stored on your machine, and whatever viewing options you enter will not be saved on my server and will not be used in any other way apart from hopefully enhancing your browsing experience. :)

As always, do not hesitate to add any comments with questions, concerns, bug reports or just a quick hello to show that you care. :)

Update 18:57: Cookies are now persistent, not just kept for the session.
