I started implementing a somewhat primitive browser dependency check on ANN. Right now, users of MSIE5 or better should experience better loading times in the "News" and "Unmoderated" categories, since I'm favouring CSS2 over nested tables for layouting. In the Unmoderated section, this reduces HTML loading time by about 10%, or 2.5k. If feedback is positive, I will complete the MSIE part as well as catering specifically for other browsers, since it is obviously impossible to write just one type of code that works best on all browsers.

In unrelated news, the Unmoderated section was once again victim of a number of submitted news items containing nothing but insults and untrue allegations. Since these were all coming from two specific IP addresses, I have blocked posting privileges for them.

[Motd] Server move, IBrowse 2.2 problems?ANN.lu

ANN was moved to a new server yesterday (twice, actually), and one or two comments were lost in the process. But what seems worse is that for quite some time I've been getting hundreds of entries in my error.log because apparently users with IBrowse 2.2 are trying to access a file called "undefined", which obviously doesn't exist. I'd appreciate if somebody with IBrowse 2.2 could give me specific feedback on what might not be working on ANN for them.

I'm safely back from my holidays, and news posting will resume sometime soon.

There has been another layout change, and the show/hide feature announced just two days ago fell victim to visitor feedback saying a three column-layout was too wide. The display options are now in the status bar again. In unrelated news, I'll be on holiday from Tuesday to Sunday, but might be able to check in from time to time. Meanwhile, Christophe has access to both the news posting and article deletion scripts.
[Motd] New features on ANNANN.lu

The display options moved to the left of the window and access to older articles is once again in the status bar at the top. If your browser supports CSS and DHTML, you can now hide the vertical navigation bars. This does not require any cookies or bookmarks, just a click every time you need it. As for display options, you can now chose whether you want to see 10, 25 or 50 news items at a time. There's also a third viewing style. These two new features can be set permanently by changing an option and bookmarking the resulting page. As always, please let me know of any ideas or suggestions you might have. I'd be particularly interested in how these new features render on "lesser" browsers - I tested on v6 versions of MSIE and Netscape.

As you might have noticed, messages of questionable content have been posted on ANN under fictious names, Fleecy's name, as well as my own name. In the latest case, the border between harmless joke and abuse/slander has clearly been crossed, and I have invoked abuse procedures. The ISP of the offending poster has been contacted, and I'm hoping they will take appropriate measures. Any future postings that fall under the same category (abuse/slander and/or impersonating some other person) will also yield the same reaction: removal of the offending posting without any further comment, contacting of the ISP, and if everything else fails, legal action. This clearly cannot continue.
[Motd] MOTD 11/Apr/2001: Ratings removedANN.lu

Ever since I introduced a ratings system ten months ago, people have mostly been ignoring it. Since the very low usage doesn't justify the storage required, as well as the increase in average bandwidth per transfer, I'm removing all rating functionality as of today. As a result, the main page should now weigh in at about 4k less than before.

I moderated up a lot of news item today after two days of inactivity due to personal priorities. :) I also finally noticed that the "Add News" preview page must have been broken for quite some time, and fixed it. Finally, those of you who are wondering why they're not getting any Notification mails: I've been neglecting this feature for quite some time, and right now, I cannot access my Eudora mail folders (Can anyone suggest how to update msvcrt.dll in Windows 2000?) and as such cannot update the address list. While the notifications are on hold right now, they are scheduled to return sometime.

ANN tracked over 16,000 requests for pages yesterday, of which over 4000 were fraudulent, coming from one IP address. While I'm not facing the same problems amiga.org has right now, only having transferred close to 400MB on Sunday, something seems to be going wrong, since it looks like almost every request has yielded an entry in my error.log for reasons I'm not quite sure yet.

Today, I think I broke the record of most news submissions in one day. There's also a new poll question in relation with this weekend's show. While this is entirely non-scientific, I guess it would still be nice to get an opinion of what the ANN-visiting part of the "community" is thinking.
