Things have been pretty slow behind the scenes at ANN. I still worked most of January 2001 and the past two weeks of February, so my free time was limited. My PC seems to be working okay now, but my dialup has been very unreliable and painfully slow (how many errors are normal in W2k's dialup status window? So far I have 143 for less than 200k transferred...). The DSL line is supposedly being installed "in a few weeks". Sounds oddly familiar. I finally found an Amiga sponsor again, so that my phone costs are almost covered. Thanks also to the individuals who offered donations - sorry I didn't get back to you - but I'm always reluctant to accept individual donations for a number of reasons I won't go into since space is limited. :) To wrap up this MOTD, I'm trying once more to find one or more reliable contributors to do a bit of moderation and article posting. Please apply via email.

My computer is in semi-working state again - the retailer I bought it from changed the mainboard, the processor and the RAM. The only problem that seems to remain right now is that my "Network and Dial-up Connections" are empty when they shouldn't, but that's just a minor issue. After seven hours of school, plus four hours of work today, all I'm planning to do is sleep, before hopefully getting back to regular updates tomorrow. What looks like a spider from a dialup in France sent over nine-thousand requests to ann.lu yesterday and today, inflating my bandwith to some extent, but not affecting the service, as far as I could tell.

Just a more or less extensive update on what's happening behind the scenes of ANN: PC trouble and school results, among others. Skip if you just come here for Amiga news, or else read more below.

[Motd] Advertisers needed | ANN.lu |
Posted on 14-Jan-2001 13:22 GMT by Christian Kemp | 43 comments View flat View list |
In a recent MOTD, I stated that the advertiser situation was bad, but I didn't expect to make less than 5$ in 13 days. So I decided to pull the only remaining advertisement banner, but I am hoping to find an alternative means of at least covering my online cost (various virtual servers, phone bill, etc.). I haven't given up the hope that Amiga companies (Amiga, Haage&Partner, and many others) will finally understand that the market would be even less alive without Amiga news sites, and finally decide to make suitable contributions to the news sites they've been using for years to post their press releases and announce their products on.
Do I sound slightly bitter? Perhaps. But with a phone bill of 100$ every month, an upcoming domain renewal for 90€, a website generating 5$ out of over 50,000 pageviews is just ridiculous...

[Motd] ANN's 4th birthday | ANN.lu |
Posted on 30-Dec-2000 20:17 GMT by Christian Kemp | 9 comments View flat View list |
ANN should have celebrated its 4th birthday two days ago, on December 28th 2000, but somehow I didn't get around to doing it. However, I still felt like doing my usual writeup of what has been going on, what is currently going on, and how the future will look like for ANN. Read more below.

Just a short update on what's happening behind the scenes here at ANN. I still don't have the DSL line I subscribed for about two months ago. I do have a new machine, however (Duron 750). In case you've been wondering, I won at the Luxembourgish Web Awards, but what I learned about them shortly before and after the awards made me not only boycot the awards show, but also keep a low profile about them on here. But thanks for voting anyway. :) In other news, there's a new direct advertiser running (see above), so check them out even if it's not Amiga-related. :) Oh, and finally: No message posted in late December would be complete without the obligatory "merry xmas and happy new year" wishes.

I'm heading to Paris for the weekend. I'll take along the laptop and cell phone, but I doubt I will be doing any updates. See you all on Monday.

[Motd] Please vote for me | ANN.lu |
Posted on 26-Nov-2000 20:57 GMT by Christian Kemp | 4 comments View flat View list |
In four days, voting for the Luxembourgish Web Awards will be over, and I would greatly appreciate if you could cast two votes for me, if you didn't already do so. Please vote for Amiga Network News and vote for my homepage by filling out the forms with your first and last name and email address. Both sites are in separate categories (editorial and personal), so voting for one won't affect the other. Why you should vote? Because there is a life after school, and winning the awards makes a nice addition on my resumé, not to mention opening potential doors for freelance work. And a webmaster who's winning is a happy webmaster, and a happy webmaster invests more time in his projects. Reasons enough? :)

I'm participating at the Luxembourgish Web Awards again, and it has become a habit that I'm asking you to please vote for me. This is pretty much the only contribution I ask from you all year long, and it is a crucial one, since I'm up to some heavy competition. So please, everybody cast your vote now! Just follow the two links below, fill in your first name, last name and email address (you will receive a confirmation but no other correspondence), and click on "Voter!".

Both sites are running in different categories ("Editorial" and "Personal"), and I'd greatly appreciate if you could spare a minute to vote for both of them. Thanks.

It seems like October will be the best month for ANN in a long time. There's been more traffic than during summer, perhaps also because I tried (also with Teemu's help) to update more often. Most of you may also have noticed the Metabox banner on the top of this page. On the downside, I recently had quite a bit of trouble with the Notify list. First, I accidentally overwrote it with an earlier version, so some of you who unsubscribed were magically subscribed again. My apologies. Secondly, there's been quite a lot of bounced mails independently of that, so if you are subscribed but didn't get at least two or three mails this week, chances are high that your email address has been removed because notify's bounced back as undeliverable.
