Quite a lot of changes today. I changed the top (logo, adverts) and removed the bottom banner of the main page. The comments script has also been changed in the same way, and I finally got around to updating the list view of a comment to the new style.

I sent of an application form for DSL access on Thursday, and am now awaiting a confirmation. If it happens, I'll spend more money for being online, but should also have a much better accessibility and speed. For you, that means there will hopefully be more updates.

I spent most of this Saturday adding older news articles (from March 1999 to January 2000) to the article database and hacking the code so that it supports the old formats again. Unfortunately, it's been a long time since I last wrote any Perl and I never really grasped its regular expressions, so that author information for March 99 to August 99 doesn't work right, yet. It's also obvious that the next step must be to add a search functionality. Meanwhile, ANN now features easy access to over 1200 news items, not counting unmoderated postings, from the last year and a half.

My first few days back at school have been okay, even if it is a big change from the (limited) independence and routine of a regular job. I'm still not posting much on ANN, but Teemu is thankfully keeping up with any current happenings. As far as technical updates are concerned, I'm thinking about doing a "promote" feature for worthy unmoderated articles, either just for moderators (Teemu and me) or for the public (based on ratings, perhaps). This might be more flexible than having to FTP in, the method I'm using right now. On a different subject, the poll is getting old again, and I've run out of ideas a long time ago. Any suggestions are gladly accepted.

I phoned and drove around a lot this morning, and finally found a school where classes weren't too crowded yet. So, after much thinking and considering, I now resigned from my job and I'm going back to school. I'd like to thank everybody for the comments and emails that reached me since yesterday evening, you sure made a difference! Not only did your ideas, stories, comments and also opposing views help me to realize which route I must take, but you also created an awesome compilation of wisdom I can go back to should I ever be in doubt later on.

It's been quite some time since I last wrote a MOTD... This one is supposed to announce beta15 of the scripts, now with a more colorful rating interface (although I'm not entirely satisfied with it yet) and a bugfix that suppresses the "Read More" link for concerned articles in a comment's flat view and shows the entire article instead. Besides that, my life has been changing lately, not always for the better, and I haven't always had the opportunity and motivation to update ANN. Even though Teemu is doing an excellent job, I'd still appreciate an additional moderator or two to increase the number of articles posted on the main page, especially for (but not limited to) the files and/or web section.
[Motd] IP addresses now tracked in commentsANN.lu

I've been forced by recent events to add a few lines of code to the comments script that will serve to track and display the IP address of where any comment that is added originates from. This is pretty much superficial, as it doesn't solve the problem of fake names or a few people pretending to be somebody else, but at least it should make it easier to track the most obvious attempts at such forgery. I don't think tracking IP's is a good thing, but it seems to have become a necessary evil to at least try to keep ANN's comments from degrading any further. Thanks for your understanding.
[Motd] Unmoderated sectionANN.lu

The article about ASM-One is just one of the many that made it to the Unmoderated section but never got moderated up. The reason is I was busy with re-installing my main computer (on a brand-new 40GB 7200RPM Maxtor DiamongPlus Max), and because there is no automation to moderate or move a news item to a different category. I now have a working mail program again, too, but lost all mails sent in recent months (I did one backup on CDR not so long ago, but found out I can't read it). I guess this just goes to prove how important regular backups are. Oh, and don't forget to check out the unmoderated section - there's usually a lot of interesting information there that doesn't always makes it on the main page.

I just wanted to point out that the ratings should be used to rate the overall quality of an article (writing style, grammatical correctness, language, whether it is on topic and relevant, etc.), and not whether it is good news or bad news (ie. whether you like the overall idea of the news item).

I'm happy to report that AmigaOnline.NET finally sent me a cheque for the money they've been owing me since April.
