Amiga Inc. April executive update : Comment 166 of 186 | ANN.lu |
Posted by Ben Hermans/Hyperion on 14-Apr-2002 16:50 GMT | In reply to Comment 164 (jack): Ben, if you're still around, can you answer a couple of questions that
might put everything in perspective?
Q: 1) Would the licensing system allow a developer (other than eyetech)
to sell OS4 with a firmware upgrade for those who buy LinuxPPC only
versions of the motherboard?
A: This would require access to the OS 4 source-code so this would pretty much need to be done by Hyperion or Amiga or in any case, not just anyone.
If there is demand for such a solution, I'm sure that Amiga would be happy to oblige.
Don't forget however that this presupposes that there is enough demand out there for a Linux only solution and subsequent demand for conversion in OS 4.
Frankly, I doubt 1) that many Linux users will be flocking to get that hardware 2) that they will subsequently be interested in going for OS 4.
But like Alan said, it can be done.
Q: 2)Would it allow you to buy new OS versions without buying a new MB -
i.e. could I buy an A1+OS4 now and then buy OS4.5 or 5 for it when
they come out?
A: Ofcourse! You don't honestly believe you will need to buy a new motherboards every time you want a new OS CD?
It will go like this: the AmigaOne/other hardware will always ship with the latest OS version (4.1, 4.2 etc.).
Existing users will be able to get a new OS package at reduced upgrade price.
>From the Exec update, it seems not. Is this just the situation for OS4
>(where everyone has to get a new machine apart from CS/BPPC users), or
>is it a permenent arrangement?
See above. The reason you need a new machine is that you can't get a PPC CPU to magically appear instead of a 68K.
An alternative might be a PCI based solution. |
