Not really a software issue... the Permedia 2 definitely lacks some important
blending modes... you can maybe "sort of" emulate some of this stuff, but it
won't look as good as in hardware...
And of course there is the speed issue... software which does a lot of texture uploads relies on a fast Bus System. What the P5 Board has is a 25 MHz clocked
Bus...
Okay, still, in 400x300 and higher resolutions it is faster than the
software renderer... and other software which does not texture-upload
such often is even MUCH faster in Lowres, but
well, the problem exists... especially for programs where the GL
Version is sort of a Hack added later to the Engine (Read: "Quake 1")
But even these "software issues" will run much faster on a decent
3D Board...
It is a hardware issue.
