I guess Bill mentioned that DirectX isn't a component to AmigaDOS,
However about your question about the Amiga - I believe the Commodore SDK did allow for freezing or killing the OS while a game acessed the registers directly. The only reason why you can do this on the Amiga is because,
A) the hardware was well documented.
B) for the most part the hardware was the same.
What direct X does is setup an abstraction layer to acess API's for various video cards directly - instead of doing it the normal way (I believe) through the Windows GDI.exe.
