Amiga have just released this press release about the AmigaOne hardware spec. Eyetech will build the first actual boxes, which are Classic Amiga/AmigaOne hybrids (both A1200 and A4000-based models will be available) and will be based on PPC. They are scheduled for a Q1 2001 release. First stand-alone AmigaOnes should ship in Q3 2001. Also, the development of the Classic AmigaOS will continue with v3.9 coming out before Christmas.

Amiga announces the AmigaOne : Comment 13 of 119 | ANN.lu |
Posted by Paul McCord on 20-Oct-2000 22:00 GMT | Well, you have got to hand it to them, Amiga have come up with a unique solution! Imagine if Commodore had released the Amiga as a "Bolt-on" to the C=64?
I must admit that the licensing of hardware to meet a software spec was probably the best way to go. The way to make Amiga is sucess in the future is to generate innovative and exciting products, and these in turn are generated by healthy competition. I don't want to see Amiga become the 'Mazda' of the IT world, where niche marketing rules, so I guess it is all up to us now.
Also, it cuts R & D costs because the hardware development is out-sourced. I will withold opinion until I see one, but I am impressed by the specs. I hope that the cost factor will not be astronomical. Expectations however will be high. I don't want to say "Great product, but....", its got to be good first time out.. |
