Here's the homepage of a new open source MPEG4-based video codec, called 3ivX. It's to be launched on December 15th. Amongst other things, Amiga support is promised.

The latest version of the codec currently works only on MacOS. It is a matter
of days before the Windows, and the *nix version catch up (a previous version
of 3ivX currently compiles and runs on those platforms). The code is extremely
well organized and it will be a piece of cake to support any other platform.
The codec uses QuickTime and there is also a branch running on XAnim. BeOS and
Amiga versions are also under active development.

Obviously a G3/G4 seems to be a minimum, but this is the future, not the old
