Boingworld Mediator A1200 Review : Comment 1 of 5ANN.lu

Spot on. I have an identical setup - apart from my tower which is a DIY job, and my 33mhz '040 - and I can echo these comments. The S3 Virge card gives a nice display (I am using 800x600 65500 Colours), but I have major problms with 16 bit displays. I cannot change from 24 bit to 16 bit without losing my display completely (hence I backup my Workbench partition each time ise the screen prefs).
I am having great difficulty in finding a Voodoo 3000. Either they are AGP or already sold! Will try buying brand new after xmas. The potential of Mediator is enormous, you can use cheap PCI network cards and host a Quake tournament or even use PCI modems. However the two things that interest me greatly are Shark PPC card - 400 / 550mhz G4 and the possibility of a PCI soundcard & driver. Combine all these elements and you have a very fast, very versatile Amiga which should not cost too much to build - factor in £279.00 for Shark PPC, £130.00 for Mediator, £55.00 for used Voodoo and around £50.00 for decent soundcard. Looks attractive when you think about it.
However, if you are buying a Graphics Card of any sort don't forget to budget for extra RAM. I started with 16mb, but this was used up in no time. A quick message on the Amibench led to me getting a 32mb SIMM but that is still barely adequate. I am limited by the lack of a second SIMM socket in my Apollo '040, but I may remedy that soon and plug in my old 16mb SIMM as well.
The only fly in the ointment is the AmigaOne. Do you wait for this or modify your existing Amiga? Well I am certain that bus speeds on the 8 year old A1200 motherboard will not compete with the AmigaOne, and that it will be much faster in practice but I do get a good deal of satisfaction from chucking new hardware on my old machine.
