Ever since I introduced a ratings system ten months ago, people have mostly been ignoring it. Since the very low usage doesn't justify the storage required, as well as the increase in average bandwidth per transfer, I'm removing all rating functionality as of today. As a result, the main page should now weigh in at about 4k less than before.

MOTD 11/Apr/2001: Ratings removed : Comment 7 of 10ANN.lu

I liked it. It was a good way to know if a posted news was welcome or not. Most of the people were doing it on the wrong way: giving bad marks for bad news and good mark for good news. But at least it was a kind of mini poll for each news item. I remember that I posted one that got 13 5.0 and then went to 17 4.75. My conclusion was that it has been usefull to post that one :)
Perhaps we need two rating system: one for information relevance and one for is it good news for you ?
But this there is some chance that it would be too complicated.
