[Forum] Any interest in Zorro cards? | ANN.lu |

I am currently toying with the idea of designing a Zorro card for the Amiga. What would the interest be in a card with the following:
10/100 mbit Ethernet, 2 X High speed serial ports, 1 X ECP/EPP parallel port & IrDa?
There is some preliminary information on my website
I am also looking at the possibility of adding a Zorro to ISA bridge and making the card work in Zorro 2 and Zorro 3 Amigas.
Are there any other features you would like?
If you are interested, please email me. If there is enough interest I will look at making some prototypes and if feasible, a short production run.

You keep thinking whatever plans Amiga >Inc. has will be to become a (if not THE) mainstread operating system to >replace Windows, and if not them, then Linux will. Who said Amiga users want >to be mainstream in the first place? I don't give a shit if the Amiga is run >by only 5-10% of computer users, as long as it's out there. The Amiga never >had more than 5% of the market share to begin with.
I don't think anyone in their right mind expects Amiga to become mainstream. However, I don't think there's many who want to see it lost in obscurity either. The Amiga market as it is today is far too small to sustain itself. The fact that we still have some manufacturers is because they're waiting to see what happens with AmigaOS4.0/MorphOS. If those don't provide enough income then you will see a complete collapse of the market and it will be all over. The Amiga needs growth, not a lot, but more users need to join the ranks. If they don't sell atleast 50,000 AmigaOnes within three years, then it's a bleak future in store for this community. For things to get interesting again we would need atleast 100,000 AmigaOnes out there, although I wouldn't expect any major companies to take us seriously unless we have over a million machines in use. Those are big numbers, but you said 5% of the market share. If we have a million new Amigas out there, we'd still have less then 1% of the market share.
As for Hitachi... Yes, I know about Hitachi and the BeOS scandal. However, what would stop a company (let's say I make one called Mike's Amiga Shop) that would throw together a PC using standard parts (ASUS MB, IBm HD, AMD AthlonXP...) and install AmigaOS x86 on it and sell it to the Amiga community? Well, nothing actually, except that AmigaOS x86 doesn't exist. Sure, Sony or Hitachi would never release their systems with AmigaOS on them, but so what? You can always install it yourself.
