Warp3D software render driver : Comment 140 of 158 | ANN.lu |
Posted by Johan Rönnblom on 22-Feb-2002 14:38 GMT | I don't mind developers discussing their problems in public.
What I regret seeing is that they are having such stupid problems.
I'd estimate 95% of the problems mentioned in this thread stems from
one developer _ASSUMING_ some other developer do be doing something
bad towards them. Without even asking the developer in question and
giving him a chance to explain, they make this ASSUMPTION and
obviously let it influence their decisions.
Like: A heard B say something, which A thinks is false. A then assumes
that B was lying. Come on, a lot of these conversations have even been
in languages *neither* of the involved parties speak natively. Might
it just be that there have been a few misunderstandings here and
there?
And. Just because C doesn't answer some email from D, D then thinks
that C somehow must hate D. Like there couldn't be a thousand other
reasons.
And. Just because E doesn't understand a certain problem or issue
about a product from F, E then thinks F must be unable to fix the
problem. It doesn't seem to occur to E that F knows his own product
better than E does (there are examples of this thinking from ALL
parties in this thread!).
As for the original issue: What's so hard to understand? Hyperion are
trying to regain their costs for Amiga development by selling licenses for
Warp3d, but selling their games is probably more important. Amiga PPC
owners without 3d hardware represents a market. We know this because they
buy games. PC owners running Amiga emulation do not represent a market.
They don't buy any games. This is a known fact - people may have their own
opinions about why this is the case, and about what should theoretically be
the case, but that's the way things are.
So, Hyperion have a good commercial reason to release the PPC version, even
for free. Since no one is likely to pay them for it, they aren't likely to
get a license from anyone. And the license fee is anyhow not so important.
Releasing it for x86 on the other hand, does not make any sense
commercially.
For the same reason, there's no reason why Amithlon should get "the same"
licensing conditions as everybody else. They are not like everybody else.
In the normal case, both Hyperion and the licensee benefits from the
license. In this case, it's doubtful that Hyperion would benefit at all.
It's also likely to mean more work for them than for comparable licenses,
since there is a totally different architecture involved. |
