Warp3D software render driver : Comment 73 of 158 | ANN.lu |
Posted by Bernd Meyer on 21-Feb-2002 01:40 GMT | In reply to Comment 59 (Ben Hermans/Hyperion): Ben,
(a) So the target audience are PPC users without 3D hardware, and thus almost certainly without a Warp3D license. So it seems you are saying that Hyperion and/or the W3D team condones the use of unlicensed Warp3D on PPC boards, correct?
(b) So the Frieden brothers in particular and Hyperion in general requested that Stephane not release his 68k and x86 renderers. As you point out, Stephane is an OS 4.0 developer. This combination makes any protestations on your part that you guys have nothing to do with any of this seem rather odd, don't you agree?
(c) You completely avoided answering my question: Would a software driver for W3D 4.0 (which is freely distributable) be OK?
But it feels like we are getting somewhere... "Bernie, this is a commercial decision on our part, it's that simple". That's coming damn close to saying "We don't like your stuff, and we *do* like PPC cards. So we simply decided to not care about the licensing issues on PPC cards, but asked a developer to suppress existing and finished software of his that would work on your stuff, citing licensing issues". Which is a position which, while I wouldn't like it, I could appreciate. But if that is your position, please come out and say so. And if it is not, please elaborate on what the "business decision" was.... |
