Warp3D software render driver : Comment 95 of 158 | ANN.lu |
Posted by Bernd Meyer on 21-Feb-2002 11:57 GMT | In reply to Comment 84 (Anonymous): Ben, was that you posting as "Anonymous"?
If so, please understand the point I have stressed again and again --- I don't have any problem with anybody expecting licenses to be paid, and I don't have any problem with authors setting their own distribution terms.
I *do* have some problem with the idea of stressing licensing issues on x86 to the point where you tell Stephane to not release his software renderer, while at the same time ignoring the exact same licensing issues on PPC (for which the software renderer is apparently OK and its use condoned).
Heck, I don't even have a problem with you guys saying "look, we are working on AmigaOS 4.0 for PPC, of course we want to keep people from giving up their PPC cards and switching to Amithlon. So we give them something for free, to tip the scales a bit our way".
But please don't always suggest I want something for free, when all I want is not even for you guys to be fair (you have your own interests, and you have put in the work for the software --- why *should* you be fair?), but just honest about your motivations.
Let me recap: A software renderer, written by a third party, exists for 68k, x86, and PPC. You condone the PPC renderer, while you actively suppress the 68k and x86 ones. Your stated reason for doing so is that, using those software renderers, Amithlon user (who lack a W3D license) could use W3D, and that's not tolerable. However, you also explicitly state that the target market for the PPC renderer are users who lack 3D hardware, and thus almost certainly also W3D licenses.
See the contradiction? |
