Amiga Inc. April executive update : Comment 95 of 186 | ANN.lu |
Posted by DaveW on 13-Apr-2002 19:53 GMT | In reply to Comment 93 (Ben Hermans/Hyperion): To be fair Ben after Apple pulled the plug on the Mac Clone makers there was no viable popular desktop operating system to run on PPC hardware ( Im ignoring BeOS ) in the eyes of those that it was attractive for. Linux has only just become a viable desktop OS ( in the form of Mandrake 8.1 ) beating MacOS and Windows for user friendliness - if Apple had pulled the plug today then I suspect we would have seen the clone manufacturers stick around for a bit pushing them as desktop systems.
OTOH Apple is a good case in point, it was only when Apple clamped down and stopped going towards being a software only company that it got the market back and was seen to be a success enough to bring new customers and developers to the platform. Their system from my last encounter is even more restrictive, you can only use the system software on the Mac you bought - it is not only tied to some hardware key but it is also tied by the install mechanism and the drivers for it.
Beside that this seems VERY enlightened for a branded commercial producer of desktop operating systems.
