the next ppc amiga : Comment 101 of 359 | ANN.lu |
Posted by Darrin on 19-May-2002 18:29 GMT | In reply to Comment 95 ([JC]): >>Standard for a PC and a Mac, but new ground to the Amiga, mostly anyway.
True, but I'm sure that all Amiga owners/users know what these ports are. I wasn't expecting the Yeti to spend as much time as he did going over them - I wanted to see more software RUNNING.
>>At least we can see proof of it actually running anything at all. And how do YOU know that it'll crash ? Is this in the same way that Windows always crashes but yet my Windows 2000 PC has never once had a bluescreen ?
But how do I know that it WILL NOT crash? I'm sorry, but I wanted to see stuff RUNNING (didn't I just say that?). To me, the actual MOS part was far too short - it showed nothing. Hell, the music at the end played for longer!!!
>>Well, it takes a lot of expensive video equipment to fix that problem. You can even see it happening on professional broadcasts. The only way they could've fixed it would've been to capture output directly from the VGA or so, and that's still complex and fairly expensive to do.
No, it's not expensive. You hit the nail n the head when you said they could have captured the output directly from the VGA output and used a cheap ($50) converter to at least show us a CLEAR 640x480 or 800x600 display. You must agree we me when I say that you can only just make out what's happening on the screen.
>>Not true, because Amiga own no trademark on the word "Workbench", and even if they did, it'd be thrown out of court the same way as Microsoft's trademark on the word "Windows" has been, therefore MorphOS is free to call it's desktop "Workbench".
You're missing the point here. That's not MOS WORKBENCH running on the video, it's AMIGA WORKBENCH. It's not MOS's desktop that's in the demo, but Amiga's. They're supposed to be writing a replacement desktop, but all this demo does is show Pegasos running an old (and possibly illegal version of MOS if it was to be sold like this commercially) version of MOS. And if MOS can legally use Amiga's code and Workbench then why are they spending months re-writing it? Hmmmm.
>>Furthermore, unless it can be proven that there is actual binary code that belongs to Amiga Inc running, it isn't illegal for it to run a workalike.
No it isn't. But this looks like the "real" thing to me.
>>Most of the other ports are components of the VIA 686B southgate chip. I should imagine therefore that they do work, since as I am using a PC using one of these chips, and it all works just fine for me. If you meant drivers, well, drivers are just a matter of code, and as Linux and BSD supports that stuff pretty well, I'd say it's likely MorphOS will too.
I agree. My point is that none of this stuff will be available to a comercial user until the Workbench replacement is finished AND the drivers are written. Until then, we have to ASSUME that the hardware on the bPlan dev-board is functional and is supported... but we have no proof. I remember seeing a BoXeR motherboard with all sorts of goodies on it - none of which worked.
> 3. The Pegasos has a G3 card available and it WILL take a dual G4
> and a G5. Well, as there is no G5 card available as they don't have
> a G5 chip to make this claim, we can only suppose that the dual G4
> is vapour too.
>>Thats a bit of a stupid statement to make.
Have you SEEN one working? Me neither, so I stand by my statement. I'm sure if one existed then it would have been in the video.
>>Well, you can be sure for certain that the AmigaONE never will <have a G4/G5>, unless you're any good with a soldering iron.
No arguments from me here. There's no way on this Earth I'm spending $550 on a motherboard only to attack it with a soldering iron. I'm simply planning on selling my old A1 board and buying an A2 later. I've lost count of how many PC's I've gone through and I seriously doubt that the Pegasos motherboard will still be the best solution to attach a G5 to when it comes out. Of course, I could be wrong, but you can't shove a P4 processor into a P1 socket.
>>I seriously don't get it. If this hardware had come out 2-3 years ago, it'd have been met by the Amiga community with great joy.
It still could be if bPlan provided the hardware to Hyperion for the production of OS4 for the Pegasos AND bPlan agreed to sell a working OS4 with the bPlan board IF THE CUSTOMER asked for it.
Instead bPlan are trying to use the Amiga name so sell something that's "not an Amiga". They have no interest in working WITH AMiga Inc and are doing everything in their power to undermine them. THAT'S the problem, not the hardware.
>>But now, AInc want to be greedy and keep all the market from themselves.
It's THEIR market - they paid for it. When you buy a house with your own money, you don't want to come home and find sqatters living in it, eating your food and trashing your furniture, It's Amiga Inc's "house" and "bPlan" are trying to "squat".
>>the loyal blind followers of Amiga cast hate upon it and MorphOS with it.
No, I once had an open mind, but after reading some of Ralf Schmidt's attacks and lies on ANN, it became quite clear who the good guys were.
I think we can both pat ourselves on the back here. We're having a civil debate with no name calling or abusive language... the way it should be :) |
