the next ppc amiga : Comment 122 of 359 | ANN.lu |
Posted by Graham on 19-May-2002 19:18 GMT | In reply to Comment 115 ([JC]): - Again, a screen that says "Amiga Workbench" doesn't really prove it's Amiga's
- code in use.
No, but it is clearly deceptive if it isn't Amiga's code.
So if it is Amiga's code, it is illegal as a product. If it isn't Amiga's code, then they are using the Amiga name yet again to forward their OS illegally - they don't have the right to use the Amiga trademark.
So logically, I expect that it is a version of MorphOS that relies on AmigaOS components to run fully still. Otherwise I would imagine that they would have called it "MorphOS Workbench" or "Morphbench" or something.
-No, but as far as I know, the G3 and G4 have very similar external interfaces,
-it's not radically different like say the original Pentium and the P4. I doubt
-Mot and IBM would be stupid enough to move away from this with the G5.
They are.
The 60x bus is very old now, and outdated. Newer G4's will implement DDR on the 60x bus, making it run effectively at 266MHz instead of 133MHz. The G5 is supposed to use a 400MHz+ RapidI/O interface to the chipset, which is completely different. It is possible that the updated G4's will still be backwardly compatible with the SDR 60x bus at 133MHz, but there is a lot of doubt regarding the G5, which will require the extra bandwidth to perform, and would therefore be crippled by a 133MHz FSB.
