the next ppc amiga : Comment 155 of 359 | ANN.lu |
Posted by Joe "Floid" Kanowitz on 19-May-2002 21:05 GMT | This was something quite enjoyable to find on a sunday afternoon. Thank Murphy I have DSL now.
Hooray, it runs. We've already seen stills of it running (if anyone remembers those show shots), and same goes for the AmigaOne. Neither of these products are (total) vaporware any longer, and that's an amazing step forward.
As to how fast/not-fast any of these nex-gen machines will be- well, I've recently made contact with the Dark Side via the Beige PowerMac G3 sitting in the other room, and even that thing is fast*, running MacOS. Remember when the classic MacOS was a symbol of bloat? (Though I hope these minute long boots don't fortell anything; the Mac takes that long and it's not running any diagnostics.)
When it comes to MorphOS and Workbench- if the legal battles succeed, it may only lead to the development of the 'identity' (it's true; the desktop is a big billboard for average users) that everyone, myself included, thinks they need anyway. The myth goes that it took R.J. a week to draw up Intuition, no? Surely it could only take two weeks to draft something better? :) (This is not to ignore Amiga's UI plans, but the world sorely needs more diversity on that front..)

The 'how fast is a 300MHz PowerPC, anyway?' footnote:
*The Mac is proving as/more responsive than Workbench on my 030ed 2000 for basic navigation (both systems have their drives on a SCSI-1 bus, though I do definitely need to put something with a more modern seek time in the 2k), which, it's true, doesn't count for much. What's scary is that even *Mozilla* is zippy on it, and that's with the G3 running on a lowly 66MHz bus, speaking PCI to a rather poor ATI chip. The only real flinch-inducer (other than the UI and the bloated thing they call 'Quicktime Player 5') is multitasking, and that's the classic MacOS showing its colors. News flash: modern hardware beats 15 year old system.. |
