Posted by Anonymous on 20-May-2002 10:19 GMT | Since no-one wants to give us any useful info, let me ask for something completely useless instead and see if even this is "under NDA"
How are Eyetech dispatching boards? See, for four weeks now we've been hearing that they do *have* the boards and it's just our impatience getting the better of us that causes this idea of a delay. But I don't know how it can take more than one day to dispatch components to mail order customers.
Here's how my usual PC component company does it:
1. Put part (in anti-static wrapper) in jiffy bag
2. Print address label and invoice
3. Put invoice in jiffy bag
4. Stick label on bag, close bag
5. Put in Courier delivery sack
Now, what's the procedure at Eyetech? Are they hand-soldering a last minute patch wire onto the boards? Do they have an 80% DOA rate which means they need to open and visually inspect each board, then burn-in all potentially good boards for a week?
What is wrong with Eyetech / the A1 board that means they can't manage next day courier delivery like every ordinary computer parts company?
I have one alternative theory. Some military related companies (I think it was in the aerospace industry) have designated zones on their sites which are technically military bases so that it's not a lie to say "That system is now installed at a base" when it is still being tested at the factory.
So maybe "Eyetech" in this context means a corner of some warehouse in Taiwan or wherever labelled "Test boards for Eyetech". That would certainly explain why call-in customers can't pick up their boards this morning -- unless they're call in customers in Taiwan (*).
(*) Taiwain chosen for illustration purposes. For some reason Eyetech won't say who is manufacturing the boards, although I guess a little bit of detective work shouldn't be too hard if I cared more. |
