Next Pegasos production sold out : Comment 53 of 280 | ANN.lu |
Posted by Raquel and Bill on 08-Jun-2002 05:42 GMT | That is correct! The next scheduled production run is for 50 boards. In July we will produce up to 500. This is what we have ordered/budgeted for components. The final amount will depend on demand and if all our component orders can be fulfilled. To date complete machines have been configured for the bplan/MorphOS/Thendic development team. We have also configured a small number of machines for a special shipment to an *outside* development group in the US. These computers were shipped prior to 1 June.
What we are selling *commercially* is the mainboard with the IBM G3 PPC indicated on our websites. This mainboard will be configured by resellers and packaged by them to meet the demands of their customers. At this point, neither Thendic nor bplan will configure complete machines for commercial release. For customers, the latest version of MorphOS will be available online as it is today and it will work on the machine. Of course, the MorphOS team will continue to enhance the features and flexibility of the OS and there will be new releases. We hope this will process will continue in the normal course of business for some time. Yellow Dog Linux can also be installed on the Pegasos, as well as other Linux PPC based operating systems -- they work too.
In the beginning, Wozniak and Jobs made 200 mainboards in the garage of Steve's parents. That is how Apple started. They sold the boards to friends and academics. Our situation is somewhat better...:) The bplan team will use the production facilities of DCE and will produce the boards and operate the fabrication machines themselves (which in our opinion is a great indication of their significant engineering skills). Normally, in a situation like this (contract manufacturing) we would not be able to touch the fabrication machines, but because of the history and the close working relationship we have with DCE we can do this. This has made the prototyping much easier.
When the market takes off -- we hope -- we will have the solid engineering and documentation necessary to shop for a larger volume production facility. Realistically, this is probably some time away from where we are now and will depend on markets that have nothing to do with this forum. Remember, for us the Pegasos is a development machine. Please reference http://www.thendic-france.com/Tech/FR/Produits/eclipsis/eclipsis.htm (French) or http://www.thendic-france.com/Tech/US/Products/Eclipsis/eclipsis.htm (English). Please forgive us for not having the German, Spanish and Italian versions published. We have just been too busy!
As announced, this next production of boards has been sold out. Some of these boards will go to friendly developers, but none of these boards have been ordered by the traditional "Amiga" resellers. They did not order any. All these boards have been ordered and a payment has been made from organizations that are Linux oriented. Again, more boards will be produced in July.
We hope this clears up any confusion. We hope the accusations of "propaganda" can now be fully ignored.
Email us if you have questions. Those that have know we will write back.
Lastly, we would like to thank Christophe for his efforts on this board. He has wrongly been chastised lately. Having said that, we would even like to thank cOrpse and Samface for becoming a little bit more moderate...:) It might be a better forum if everyone had the courage to put a real email address on their postings. Accountability is something most cowards can't handle and intelligent people who believe in what they are saying do not have a problem with personal dialogue.
Best regards,
Raquel and Bill
P.S. For those that keep asking... Raquel runs XP. It works quite well, but she has a very special machine. I run YDL or OS X on my PowerBook G4. YDL comes with three web browsers, but Mozilla seems to work the best for me. Both are laptops. |
