New Executive Update : Comment 105 of 128 | ANN.lu |
Posted by MasterOfReality on 24-Jun-2002 21:43 GMT | As I understand it the voucher scheme probably wouldn't be illegal in the UK.
The whole "no purchase necessary" thing is a way around gambling laws. If you buy a pack of crisps with an instant win offer ont them you are technically also paying to enter a lottery, illegal for under 18s (excepting the national lottery, which is for over 16s) and theoretically taxable. If the draw entry is free (ie no purchase necessary), OR only over 18s can enter (eg something requiring a credit card) it should be legal (the tax thing is a non issue because VAT>Betting tax).
Providing it were worded a little more carefully Eyetech could probably repeat the scheme in the UKsafely enough, provided they didn't accept switch or electron transactions.
Or that's what a Law graduate friend of mine thinks, anyway.
That said, I'm not going to participate in the offer. I already have an A1 on the way. |
