Request Amiga Port Of Opera : Comment 7 of 20 | ANN.lu |
Posted by Anonymous on 17-Sep-2002 20:10 GMT | In reply to Comment 3 (anarchic_teapot): The last Amiga port was part of "Project Magic". This customer driven porting plan was one of the last ill conceived ideas to come from Helmar Rudolph before he and Opera parted ways (after that Helmar got involved with BeOS, just so you know how good he is at picking winners)
Opera is a small company, and although it didn't put its own engineers on "Project Magic" it did waste a lot of engineering time supporting the losers who'd been brought in by Helmar to do the real work. I have no idea whether they also received financial compensation up front.
All the "Project Magic" ports were more or less failures. On Linux a completely new port was done by Trolltech, and something similar happened on the Mac iirc.
Since then all new Opera ports have been done on a cash basis. Companies that want Opera for their platform (e.g. QNX) must give Opera Software a pile of money so that they can justify hiring the extra talent to make it happen. If they stop paying, new versions of the port stop arriving. There is no pile of money for OS/2, Solaris or BeOS. So there are no new ports.
Is there a pile of money for AmigaDE or AmigaOS ? I didn't think so. |
