Interview with Bill M on Extremetech : Comment 66 of 98 | ANN.lu |
Posted by PaulT on 12-Nov-2002 19:30 GMT | In reply to Comment 39 (Bill Hoggett): I have to disagree strongly with a point that isn't that important :)
>> As much BS was in the interview, the 7 million Amigas wasnt one of them.
>> He simply stated that many were sold, and that in and of itself is true.
>The 7 million was mentioned twice. I'm referring to this bit:
>"The Amiga stuff is designed for the Amiga community, the 7 million systems >sold."
>Taken in context it gives the impression that the Amiga community - those who >would be interested in the new AmigaOS - are 7 million strong.
As others have pointed out, the difference is between what you are assuming from blindly listening to a salesman, and what the words actually SAY. The salesman would like to show his (our) history in the best possible light. If 7 million Amigas were sold, that means only that. The community? Well, including machines I've bought for spares and 8510s, I've bought 5, and been deeded a couple of more for free. Typical? who knows?
His statement IN NO WAY can be reasonably interpreted as stating that there are or ever were 7 million Amigans, it's inviting you to make your estimate of users based on machines sold.
-Lots of machines, for instance in families, had multiple users.
-If I bought a used 1200 from someone who was moving on, and I wasn't already an Amiga user but he was quitting it, did that increase the number of users? -Does the "community" mean all those who have ever used one extensively or exclusively for some period of time? That number at least would have to be in the millions.
Sniping at the pure salesman stuff should be the least of our targets. Stating that the OS is 2 or 3 weeks from release, when he has said that he'll hype no product before it ships, now THAT is reprehensible. But I (only judging from publically available information and opinions of others) see Amiga Inc as on the ropes financially and desperately needing to keep its image afloat, so I figure it's as usual the 'optimistic - if all goes perfect' viewpoint being floated, as opposed to realism in the software industry. The latter is:
Take each shipping estimate;
Double it;
Change to the next larger unit of time! |
