According to Irmen de Jong, the AmigaPython website maintainer, the Python programming language may be included as standard with AmigaOS 4.0.
From the AmigaPython site:
UPDATE november 2002: from very reliable sources I know that AmigaPython might become part of the new Amiga OS 4.0 ! What AREXX was for AmigaDOS 2.x and 3.x, AmigaPython might be for the next generation of Amiga OS (and much more powerful of course)
Further information about Python is available at the Python Home Page.

AmigaOS 4.0 to include Python? : Comment 10 of 94 | ANN.lu |
Posted by David Shipman on 24-Nov-2002 21:44 GMT | In reply to Comment 4 (Bill Hoggett): "Perl and Python are different languages and have different strengths and weaknesses... IMHO both ought to be included as standard with all modern operating systems."
Of course, they should be _available_ to users of all modern OSs, but if you want to satisfy everyone, you'll see the list growing a lot larger than Perl and Python...
Moreover - what happened to SHEEP? It sounded very similar to Python (interpreted... simple code for simple tasks - power when it needs it). I'm guessing AI just couldn't justify the resources involved in reinventing this particular part of the wheel.
How about a language-agnostic approach to scripting ala BeOS? Provide useful scripting hooks at a low-level, and just provide bindings for those languages you see as "worth it" (in the short term). This way the community (or AI, or anyone really) can bind another language as they see fit. |
