Our favourite platform has achieved the number 9 spot for the top ten vapourware products of 2002. http://www.wired.com/news/culture/0,1284,57023,00.html for details.
From the article:
"9. The new Amiga: Earlier this year, fans of the Amiga were in a tizzy about the prospect of a revival of the comatose platform: Both new machines and a new operating system were promised. Suffice it to say, neither are readily available.
"Some retailers and the Amiga website are taking orders for systems, but 'selling' and 'shipping' are two very different things," wrote reader Russ Van Winkle.
Swift Griggs added: "I've heard promises now for three years. Amiga Inc. has delivered nothing but lies and hot air now for three years, just like everyone who has come before them in the post-Commodore Amigan holocaust."

Yeah, well Ben Hermans says now "this time it's real" and before him Bill McEwen said "on schedule and rockin'" and before them all the other trademark holders said similar things, but who has delivered really?

Listen, you are not dumping Amiga by going with Pegasos, you are dumping Amiga Inc. and there is a big difference. I have used Amigas since 1989 or so, and you think I am "dumping Amiga" by becoming a Pegasos and MorphOS user? Hell no! I still enjoy that platform, and for me Genesi is carrying on with the things that were best about it.

You have a few choices out there like Linux and QNX and Mac, but if you want alternative modern hardware and software that runs many apps for the classic Amiga platform then you have the choice of MorphOS and Pegasos. It comes from people who have been involved in this community for years, and yes IMO it carries on the "spirit" of the platform. We would like for you to join us, but nobody is forcing you to do this or anything, you can do what you like.
As far as I am concerned the future is now, some people can choose to wait around forever, but they don't need to wait. I am not waiting. Jay Miner debuted the original Amiga at CES many years ago, and Genesi is going to be there a week from today. I will too and I think we are going to get a good turnout from other Amigans. Amigans should be happy about all this but there are elements that want to factionalize and divide us. It is time to put all that aside and enjoy the great products, and events that are happening around us. |
