At the recent Pegasos-presentation at the central station in Leipzig, Germany, also Mandrake 9.1 was shown on the Pegasos, installed using Michael Heider's Image-Installer.

There are a lot of GNU tools that are used almost everywhere e.g. compilers, if you do your research you'll notice that RMS licensed the GNU C library under a special license that allows it to used in non opensource projects.

However I digress, the GNU project was formed to create an operating system and not just a bunch of tools for everyone elses .... so the GNU created a shell etc on other operating systems in readyness for their operating system kernel : HURD. Linus started his kernel in '91 using the GNU tools to build it and to form a base operating system with his kernel.

RMS doesn't want the Linux *KERNEL* to be called GNU/Linux .. he wants systems using the GNU tools as their base operating system to make the fact clear, so for Linux operating systems he suggests GNU/Linux .. fair enough.
