The AmigaOS 4.0 Powerpoint presentation that was displayed in Montlaur on saturday the 5th is now available.
This document was displayed to the amigans in Montlaur, France last saturday. It is a snapshot of the work in progress on AmigaOS 4.0.
We hope this will help you understand what was realised, and what still needs to be done.
Please note that the list of PPC modules is growing everyday (and I mean everyday : This morning we received icon.library).
The file is available as a PowerPoint presentation (original file), a PDF file, and a set of JPEG images.
This is a french document, so please feel free to translate it.

French AmigaOS On Tour presentation available : Comment 38 of 70 | ANN.lu |

LOL.
I just can't stand ignorant use of colors and the AOS4 screenshots (in the last months) have been outstanding examples in the art of gruesome combinations of colors and textures. Now about those icons:
Selecting a color theme obviously is a good thing for consistency, and sixteen colors or another low number might be a reasonable choice for an icon set. However, you still need many more shades for good icons for internal antialiasing. The AOS4 icons are not only too small for typical TFTs (now having a fixed resolution of 1280x1024), they also have rugged edges like the Rocky Mountains and internally, grainy dithering is used to simulate more colors instead of directly using 24bit colors. The result is a rather disgusting home computer icon look.
Some argue that icons can not be 24 bit with OS4 because its UI is palette-based and with only 256 pens available, the icon system would take too many pens away from the OS. However, considering that Picasso and CGX both can render 24 bit images directly to the screen, bypassing the pen system, I don't buy that argument. |
