It is a new game coming to the Pegasos and MorphOS!
R&B
This thread began here on amiga.org. You can trace the thread through the concept until today. It was developed as a Community and it offers another example of what is possible when cooperation takes form.
It is going to be a great project and it will be the first game developed inside this community that will be distributed by a MAJOR organization...more to come!

Posted by Anonymous on 11-Oct-2003 13:56 GMT | In reply to Comment 7 (Linus Gustafsson): >Whouldn´t it be quite difficult to make a game based on Otherland? The books are great but I doubt that it is possible to make a gama out of it...with todays technology that is ;-)
Guess so. Also, strictly speaking, Pegasos is tomorrows technology ;-) I wanted to suggest Otherland earlier, because it is THE ideal story/setting/framework for an online game. Virtual reality bridging into reality. And it is a bestselling book that has a lot of fans that would love to enter Otherland. Think of selling Pegasos + game + book as "Otherland terminal pack". Maybe in a specially designed case looking like a virtual reality console. Btw, "Gladiateurs" could be one of Otherlands scenarios. You will have to have read the books to understand the last sentence.
Unfortunately, I couldn't (and still can't) think of a way to satisfactorily convert Otherland into a game, without looking crude.
Possibility 1: Game starts as 2D console (hacking into Otherland), then ego-shooter perspective. With 3D glasses. But current virtual reality implemenations are not up to the requirements, the game would be too crude to satisfy. For Otherland, you would need a lot of AI (a lot of talking with the simulated persons) and a convincing simulation of physics, combined with stunning graphics, not to speak of multi user coordination. It's a project for years and a big team. But it is sooo tempting. You could even fit in bbrv's pet idea of smart cards into this scenario: People could by Otherland's artifacts (teleport keys) in form of smart cards. Or the Eclipsis handheld could be the teleport key. Possibilities galore.
Possibility 2: make it an interactive film with real actors that allows you to explore Otherland. Takes the technical difficulties out of the equation and caters to the visual aspect. Big budget idea and out of reach to us.
Possibility 3: make it a text adventure. Not adequate to the spirit of Otherland, and that genre is passe anyway. |
