Garry Hare Interview Now ONLINE : Comment 243 of 364 | ANN.lu |
Posted by DaveP on 27-Mar-2004 05:29 GMT | In reply to Comment 210 (Mikey_C): I dont particularly feel the need to apologise for anything apart from being a brazen cynic and cynics should never apologise ( hi Bill ). If I had indeed acted with the character this anonymous is trying to claim about me maybe I would have something to answer for. But, I did not. In fact on the thread in question ( where I refused to look at a hires image at that point for reasons I explained ) I did not moderate anyone and recommended people not fall in to the trap of a certain person trying to make it a question of Wayne Hunt's honourability which I found totally reckless and uncalled for and guaranteed to spiral out of control into further acrimony between amiga.org and amigaworld.net.
As for IRC channels, there are a number of people who used to come into #amigaworld just to flame people, stir up trouble and then just leave, coincidentally they claimed more often than not to be morphos/pegasos users.
Since then the channel gets jumpy when other people with "pegasos" "pegmos" etc turn up in the channel. Sometimes people go to far and are downright rude to new joiners - most of the time it gets spotted and the person who is rude gets sorted out.
Contrast this with #morphos where DaveyD was banned on entrance, I was banned after a day where I had asked a few probing questions ( actually I was considering pegasos as part of something to do with my company plans and thanks to the courtesy of one peg owner whom I hold the utmost respect for I still am ), had a row with "magnetic" and then sorted it out ( over moderation! ) and settled down. In fact apart from the row it was a pleasant chat and made me think that things could be sorted out. The next day I popped in but it was to busy at work to type so I let the connection idle. Laire_ popped up demanded I left, but I was AFK, then he kickbanned me. Im not the only one who has been booted out arbitrarily or given a cold reception. Nor are the people above who have visited #amigaworld.
So, in conclusion, both IRC channels have done some daft things, and indeed all sites have, but this continued attempts to nail people to the cross over them gets us nowhere.
Sure there is polarisation over how to interpret the last three years events ( if not longer back ) and the people that have polarized call each other blind, fanatical and all sorts of other words that indicate that they themselves are also unable to see another point of view. Sure that will go on, but for pitys sake is worth FIGHTING rather than debating? Is it worth letting the 3 or so "bad" users ( the agitators ) continue to sow more than just division - antagonism and rage?
Frankly I see we are in a bit of a rescue situation, on the "red" side the situation has been in rescue mode for a LONG time and will continue to be so even after OS4 has released. Hey, I don't even pretend that OS4 will rival Windows or anything or that it is even a viable market for a return to the historical model ( which in fact helped get us to this sorry situation ).
Maybe it is my polarisation that means that I see /better/ times ahead for AOS4 and an oncoming storm for MorphOS ( reading all the latest Genesi news ). I would like to see MorphOS weather that storm and so would many others on the "red" side, perhaps the "red" experience of the last year or so taught empathy with the situation. Fortunately MorphOS has 6-800 or so users supporting it so its likely to survive. It would be nice in this context if people didn't stick the knife in Pegasos or MorphOS over the recent incidents and just stuck the knife where it is supposed to be.
Damn, it doesn't even have to be anything constructive ( that would be nice though ) but an end to the petty knife fights that is the crossover debating boards ( like ANN ) and an end to this urge to screw each other over all the time.
Not even bother to demand apologies for past behaviour, just say "hey we are grown up people, we are bigger than this lets just get on with the job". The cynics would not even have to give up being cynical and forthright. You never know it might work, if we tried it.
Have a nice weekend, The Evil Biased Nasty Man Who Beats People DaveP ( off for a long weekend away from the computer ). |
