Hans-Jorg Frieden has posted a detailed status update on the progress of OS4 to Amigaworld.net.
Brief summary:
· Picasso96 and MUI PPC native
· Kernel supports PPC performance monitor and Altivec
· Moovid (released with OS3.9 as "action") is now running native, and can play DivX and other common formats
· GCC 3.4.0 is ported
· The C libraries are much faster. As a result AmiPDF is up to 60 times faster.
· Serial and floppy drivers coming soon
· USB is working and supports HID devices like keyboards and mice as well as HID joysticks and steering wheels, and USB mass storage devices like USB sticks, flash card readers, 7-in-1 card readers and cameras
· A1 IDE device now has working UDMA support. Also, interrupts are no longer polled but delivered properly. This means that the device does not require any CPU time for transfers.
This material will in due course be released for download to registered users of the Developer Pre-release on our web site at:

OS4 progress since pre-release : Comment 200 of 228 | ANN.lu |
Posted by itix on 10-Jun-2004 13:24 GMT | In reply to Comment 195 (Crumb // AAT): "You could recompile easily for 68k 90% of MOS programs and components without doing many changes." Those 68k systems are often lacking decent CGX or don't have an AHI installed. CPU is slow, no USB nor PCI, unless you buy hacky HW extensions. And then you have problems with unified API. OpenPCI or not? P96 or CGX? AHI or not AHI? Should I code for MUI, Reaction, ClassAct or GadTools? Which one is best? Why so many kludges at all? OS3 is terrible mess which should be abandonded immediately. And yes, there is mmu.library for OS3... But you can't assume everyone have got this installed. In fact, there are even Amiga users without MMU... Now code decent software for platform like this. It is like MS-DOS with all hacky kludges glued together. What is the best in OS4 and MOS is that they throw away those kludges. You can assume everyone have one USB solution, one PCI solution, you have AHI and so on. |
