Posted by Anonymous on 29-Aug-2004 10:20 GMT | In reply to Comment 4 (Johan): "500 euro for a peg2 with a g4, or 600 euro for a amigaone with a g3... all the choices ;D"
Pegasos2, an almost MiniITX format motherboard (it is only a few centimeters higher to make room for the AGP and extra PCI slots), with a real fast Northbridge that actually works, cheap and easy to find DDR memory, a fast G4 processor running 25% faster than the A1 G3 (not bringing the Altivec advantages into the calculation), INCLUDING MorphOS AND many of the Linux distributions out there = 500 Euro (plus a cheap gfx card). Available now.
MiniA1-I motherboard (which is the closest match to the Pegasos featurewise) is almost as big as the Pegasos, has a few high speed data standards on board, but that doesn't matter much when the data is fed through the Articia in the end (theoretical numbers may good for marketing though). Limited expandability, expensive and rare to finde memory, No OS running on it, No Linux for serious usage, a G3 only with no possibility of using G4 (G4 on the Articia may be acceptable to Amiga Nerds, but its unacceptable for serious applications (Industrial users)) = 600 Euro, OH, You want the OS too, that ends up in 700 Euros including OS4. Available ... sometime in the future ... perhaps.
The Mini A1 I is much worse off compared to the Pegasos when it comes to performance, specifications and expandability. It is also 200 Euros more expensive. The OS (OS4) is far behind MorphOS, possibly a couple of years. That wont stop a few Amiga nerds from bying it though, but I wonder how they will pull it off with large scale Industrial customers, when the MiniITX boards from VIA and the Flex ATX boards from several manufacturers are so much cheaper and so much better. It will be interesting ... |
