Amigaworld.net is currently down due to hard drive failure.
Everything possible is being done to return the site to normal, however we are unable to give an ETA at this time.
In the meantime, the Amigaworld IRC network continues to function via the remaining US and European Amigaworld Servers
They are:-
UK.Amigaworld.Net
US2.Amigaworld.Net
NO.Amigaworld.Net
Updates will continue to be posted here as and when we know.

Amigaworld.net down : Comment 101 of 281 | ANN.lu |
Posted by Kay on 03-Sep-2004 10:17 GMT | In reply to Comment 96 (takemehomegrandma): I noticed there was some anger about the "exodus", but in our defence, at the time it happened, it was nigh-on impossible to post anything relating to the official NG Amigas on either ANN or AO without being viciously attacked. I found myself spending at least 70% of my online time explaining and defending things I had said earlier, often to people with no real intent of trying to understand me. When Amigaworld.net appeared on the map as an alternative for us "reds", I gave it a try, and within one day I decided this was where I would post from now on. Finally there was a place where I didn't have to weigh every word I wrote, and where people I discussed with would actually try to understand what I was saying.

I see your point, it never should have been like that. But I think there were three factors which added greatly to the hostility:
* The fear that the split would leave two weak platforms rather than one slightly less weak one. There was a lot of "trying to gun down the other alternative quickly" on both sides.
* The behaviour of certain people on the top. In my opinion, special credit goes to Bill Buck, who seemed to be making more announcements about the AmigaOne than his own product. I won't go into details, but Bill Buck, with his ultra-agressive attitude and to me obvious insincerity, did many things which angered me.
* The extreme mud-slinging towards people who decided to stick with the Amiga platform. There was mud going both ways, but I really think there was more heading towards me than away from me. Probably this was due to a few loudmouths having a strong need to defend their own "betrayal" of the Amiga name they had religiously followed for so long. I myself was labelled a "Blind Amiga Follower", a wanker, a moron (thanks, Bill Buck), a liar, a fanboy, and probably more. Apparently, the only reason anyone would go the AmigaOne route was that they were too stupid or religiously obsessed to see past the Amiga brand name.
Some extra tolerance on both sides could probably have gone a long way towards keeping the community together, but unfortunately, there was little to be found at the time. :-(
Anyway, it seems both platforms are doing ok these days. It might just turn out okay in the end.
> This is a foolish luxery, since *I know* about its problems and *I know* that
> they will never be fixed, but hey, it's only money, right? ;-)
If you're talking about the lack of DMA under Linux, then I'm afraid you're right. :-/
