Actually, 3DNow(recycles X87 registers) is 64bit wide, while SSE2 (XMM registers) 128bit wide. Software such as RC5 uses vector instruction such as vector rotate. Such instructions doesn’t exist in X86 land i.e. it has to use scalar version. One of the reasons why AMD preform better than PIV in RC5 is due to 3 integer scalar pipelines.

As indicated via SSE -> SSE2 -> SSE3 evolution, X86/X64’s SIMDs are currently under construction i.e. adding vector instructions. Generally, X86 world targets desktop world usage.
