Lynxx forwarded a mail originally posted to the openamiga-dev group at eGroups.com. Well, the new owners of the Amiga, Amino, have let it be known that should it be legally possible, the Amiga OS will indeed be released as open-source software sometime in the future. Hello!

president@amigakernel.org has invited you to join the openamiga-dev group at eGroups.com, a free email service. By joining this group, you can share information, store photographs and files, coordinate events and more!

president@amigakernel.org says:

Here is a welcome statement provided by the group moderator:
---------------------
Dear Amiga Developer,

If you are receiving this e-mail, it is because you completed COSA's Open Source Survey/Petition at survey.amigakernel.org, and pledged your support for an open-source future of AmigaOS.

What's more, you indicated that should AmigaOS be released as open source, you would like to work as part of a development team that would be in charge of the open-source AmigaOS development project.

Well, the new owners of the Amiga, Amino, have let it be known that should it be legally possible, the Amiga OS will indeed be released as open-source software sometime in the future, so we need to start cracking!

We are therefore contacting all software developers who pledged their support for Open Amiga, and asking you to fulfill your pledge.

Please respond to this e-mail by clicking Reply, then Send, and you will be added to the Open Amiga Developers Group. From there, we will explain the current status of our talks with Amiga, the relationship between COSA/Open Amiga and AROS, and discuss the future of AmigaOS as Open Source Software.

We need everyone's help. Please respond, and join us in planning and creating the future of the Amiga operating system.

Thank you for supporting Open Amiga, and for sticking with us. We appreciate your continued support, and we look forward to building the future of the Classic AmigaOS with you!

Best regards,

Steve Crietzman

AmigaOS to be Open Sourced? : Comment 1 of 1ANN.lu

Hi All --
Well, bless my cotton socks, I didn't expect to see this here. I
guess I should point out a few things about this e-mail that was sent
to Open Amiga's registered developers.
1. Fleecy Moss has long stated, in public forums, that himself and
Amino support open source, so I felt it safe to reiterate in our
invitation to developers that this was the case. So this isn't "new
news", in such a sense.
2. It should be pointed out that Gateway still own the Amiga patents,
and many legal obstacles must be explored, and this may still cause us
problems.
3. However, providing it is possible to work through them, we are
confident that the Amiga OS will be released, based on our discussions
with Amino.
It MUST be stressed, however, that this is NOT a promise or an
official statement by Amino. If it doesn't happen, please remember
that Amino do not hold all the cards -- Gateway still hold some OS
patents and this is an issue that is being examined at present.
That said, however, if anyone reading would like to join our
development team, you are most welcome to join our discussion lists
for members (openamiga-subscribe@egroups.com) or developers
(openamiga-dev-subscribe@egroups.com).
Just thought I should clarify these points. I don't want to be
responsible for raising people's hopes too much prematurely. It
should be noted this e-mail was not intended as a public post, but as
an e-mail to registered Open Amiga Developers. As such, I was rather
surprised to see it posted here.
Hope this clarifies a few points and puts things in perspective a
little.
Thanks again!
Best regards,
Steve Crietzman
