Ben Vost writes on the Amiga Format Bulletin: I've known about p5 for about three weeks, and the major concern was what to do about folk who'd actually stumped up the deposit and so on. While there may not be a G4 in the works, people who did pay a deposit should get their money back... however, since DCE paid for a licence to manufacturer some of the p5 products, they may also pay a small sum to be able to finalise the G4 boards that p5 *was* developing...

I hope at least DCE will produce Blizzard with 603e and 060's... they're not fast as G4, but there's still a big demande of PPC and nowadays it's hard to find them.
Also the production of BVision would be appreciated :)

A G4 is just a G3 with the altivec unit (which nothing will probably be optimized for anyway)
Actually, isn't a G3 basically just a 603, but faster with better cache?

In reply to Comment 4 (Mike):
Agreed, I believe the G3 was based on the 603 design. But it's a heck-of-alot faster.
In regards to the use of CPU's, there are people who are actually satisified with 060's, but I never understood that either. 060's are so overpriced, it just makes more since to jump to a G4 and do 68k emulation. Although at this point a G3 Amiga would be nice. The PPC boards were all way over priced; They sounded good when stated on P5's suggested price list, but by the time you could buy one, it was several hundred dollars more than the retail, _Plus_ you had to pay an extra $250.00 to get an 060 put on it. By that point the board cost almost $1200.00 US, and you could buy a whole new system, monitor included on other platforms.
If companies are going to produce PPC cards, they need to not put so many unwanted features as to make them over priced....They may sell more that way. :)

I think IBM POP (PowerPC Open Platform) is the only way to go now...
It has G3/G4, AGP, PCI, USB, e.t.c,
We should support H&P`s effort for porting Amiga OS 3.5 to PPC..
I`m sure a G4 based P.O.P will also be able to run new Elate based
AmigaOS...
I think it`s the right time to forget AmiJoeG3 or Phase5G4..
Don`t torture your A1200/A4000 motherboards anymore..603 and 604
are more than enough for them

Ofcourse we all prefer G4 boards because they're new and the 68k emulation (let's hope it'll be good) should make them less expensive...
But if they can't be produced, better a 603 than nothing :)

I think this is getting rediculous. I can't even run a PPC board on my A3000 t'll I fix the floppy/cia/serial problem - and I'm having a hard time getting the chips for doing that.
What we need is a PPC AT/ATX motherboard we can get cheap that will run a PPC native version of Amiga DOS. Please! No more hacks!
Also if they have the access to the source of Amiga DOS and the Kernel/Rom why can't they do what I mentioned above? Lets rebuild the system today!

This is exactly what the Boxer will be, an Amiga on a standard ATX motherboard.
There is a socket in which you can stick a G4 accelerator which would need
practically no additional hardware or chips, basically a G4 on a tiny board.

This is exactly what Haage&Partner intend to do with their OS license. By the
time Amiga OS gets to v4, it will be completely PPC. That's AmigaOS, PPC native.
My question is, if they do this now, then why did we have to listen to all the
crap over the years about it being too much time/money/effort/impossible? Maybe
it couldn't have been done in the past, technically speaking, but now they can?
Either way, when the Boxer comes out, you get a pretty powerful, optimised Amiga
with a heck of a lot of expansion potential. If and when someone can make the G4
card for it (what about the AmiJoe people?), you get an Amiga running on a chip
twice as fast as the fastest PIII, and by that time (hopefully) H&P will give
OS4 PPC. AmigaOS on a G4: Yeah baby, YEAH!!!

I'd rather not see another PPC patch board for Amiga without standard PCI and AGP. Either IBM's POP board running PPC ported Amiga OS (which means that we need to port all our software), or Transmeta running native 68k codes is preferred.

Did anyone think that the AmiJoe might be a solution ?
The G3 and G4 or, to my knowledge) pin compatible, so you can just stick a G4 in the G3 Socket.
But I am not sure...
Hey the AmiJoe should be released this month, and it is cheap...
Why not just use AmiJoe.. I will..
P5 has made so many promises, and now it is over, that is really a shame, but what can we do ?

The "problem" with MetaJoe is that they don't have a gfx card ready, and if
sales are not good enough there will never be. I'm already stuck with a 603e
without gfx card...

I can't believe my grammar's so bad in that mail. Sorry about that.
Also, while a POP box running Elate would be a nice idea, I have the
feeling that Fleecy, Bill and co want to do something else for the
hardware.

The AmiJoecard must be released with a GFX board.
If not, then games or applications for G3 will be useless.
What is the interest of having Heretic II, WipeOut, Mpeg video decoder, multimedia software in AGA PAL 320x256 ?

As you said no GFX card ready.
But MetaBox only made on promis, the AmiJoe, and it is almost ready.
Then they promised a GFX card, I do not know how development on the GFX card is progressing.
But no GFX card, that is a problem I agree.
So if they want to sell the AmiJoe, they must realse a GFX card to, but I think they know that already.. So my guess: they are making a GFX card.. I hope :-)

Good idea peoples, lets wait for AmiJoe...
But Hey I own a Big Box amiga, You know one of those A4000
thingies. Well what about those systems? No news has been
released on anything other than the AmiJoe A1200, so thats
a real problem. Well lets see what they do...
Because I sure would be pissed if they didn't cater for
the larger systems.

Yep. No GFX card, no upgrade!
I can't live without a GFX card now, and will have to stay with BlizzPCC/BVisionPPC combo untill a G3/4+GFX card is ready.

In reply to Comment 5 (Tony Gore):
I agree that we need more power, and we need it yesterday.
BUT..
The reason some ppl still like their 060's is because, as yet, there
IS no official 68K emulator for PPC on Amiga and the ones in
development are being plugged at around 040 speeds. Until all the
peripheral software you use is natively ported to PPC, anyone with an
060 is effectively expected to "downgrade" to an 040 emulation.
Sure, there are newer titles coming out with PPC support, but its not
enough to build a new platform on.
I see the "ideal" situation as a really keen 68K emulator that offers
a substantial performance *increase* over 060's for current apps,
running on the latest spec PPC hardware. Most new s/w would then get
the PPC treatment as par for the course.
