Just a short update... I've been replying to emails for the last two hours, and still have plenty left. I hope to work on ANN's code over the weekend. As for doing updates at work, I received an informal warning that I'm surfing too much, so I'll have to be more careful. On an unrelated note, would anybody be willing to "donate" a modest amount of money and instead get a "pure" ANN, without any banner adverts, cookies or popup windows whatsoever? What do you think about this idea? Please respond in the comments section and if there is sufficient feedback I might start a poll on this.

Continue the good work. |

Posted by Spudley on 23-Feb-2000 23:00 GMT | It's kinda like paying a shareware fee - you pay partly because you
want updates to continue, and partly because you're so happy with the
product you already got.
My biggest question is: are you thinking of a once-off amount, or an
annual subscription like CUCUG had? (both are perfectly valid, but
you'd get different results from them)
The trouble with small amounts as have been mentioned is paying in
foreign currencies becomes hardly worth the effort once conversions
have been factored in.
I would like to contribute a little, but in all honesty, I really
don't mind banner ads, and I have even been known to click on them
every now and then. The ones that I didn't like were the latest pop-up
ads (I've been making a point of avoiding Tripod and Geocities sites
ever since they started with the same things).
Hmmm... Sorry for the confusion of random thoughts there :-)
Regards,
Simon "Spudley" Champion.

Posted by Flavvy on 24-Feb-2000 23:00 GMT | I personnally prefer a web site without banners but you have
to have an income for all your work. Password only sites are
a bad idea espescially if you want people to trip into the
site and then think - Oh Amiga I remember that , I wonder
what is happening to them.
Banners are sometimes a pain but you get used to them.
Anyway how would you gather the income? And would it not be
better for you to get non Amiga money rather than money from
people who are trying to support the excellent platform.
But I would hate to see anything bad happen to ANN since it
has been a good source of info for me for a long time. |

Yes, I would be willing to donate. How much do you need to raise? |

Posted by John Block on 24-Feb-2000 23:00 GMT | 1) Lots of Amiga companies are offering user group discounts. Maybe you could be paid the equivalent of this discount. There is a site listing discounts on offer. Readers are likly to buy cards and software anyhow and mentioning Ann when ordering costs them nothing.
2) Your employers probably look for results. Give them a banner on Ann and secretly register tham with http://www.broadcaster.co.uk a highly effective site promotion co. using your own email (it costs 50 pounds).
Your employers will find their site visits increase after you promoted them on Ann and encourage you to spend more time on the site!

Since we are specialised in Reporting Solutions for Luxembourgish banks, our
market is limited, and therefore traditional adverts or promotion don't work.
Anyway, the way I was told to "surf less" was not a strict warning, not written,
and more of an advice I'll be following than anything else. I guess I have to
add that I wasn't just updating ANN, but also surfing to other computer- and
finance-related sites, as well as reading on message boards about my new car :) |

Posted by John Block on 24-Feb-2000 23:00 GMT | In reply to Comment 11 (Christian Kemp): If you don't look at other websites, their approach, navigation, what works and does not etc. your employers website will suffer. Hard to communicate this, without it sounding like an excuse. |

Posted by Martin Steigerwald on 24-Feb-2000 23:00 GMT | Hi Christian!
Thanks for your valuable work I browse daily or almost daily to your
great Amiga Network News. I could pay $10 or $20 maybe to help you
to carry on ann.
Be careful with your "Arbeitgeber" (at work). It would not be good
if you get fired cause you do ann at work. ;) |

Posted by Spudley on 27-Feb-2000 23:00 GMT | Just a thought...
If you really wanted to make money from all the work you're putting into ANN, why not sell your scripts as a package (either commercial or shareware).
You've got a great news/comments/articles CGI engine here, and you're working on it continually. Why not sell that work as a package for other sites?
There are a number of CGI packages out there for bulletin-boards and such (eg the Ultimate BB, used by Amiga.org and formerly at Amiga.com), but I've not seen one on offer which specialises in news and articles.
Just a thought.
Kind regards,
Simon "Spudley" Champion.
