Helmut Fuchs spoke to a Met@box salesperson at CeBit 2000, who confirmed that AmiJoe will definitely see the light of day. Read more below. I spoke to a salesperson at one of the Met@box booths at the CeBit in Hannover today. When I asked her about news on the AmiJoe Card she said, that it would definetly see the light of day and the hardware is quite complete, but that the software is still not ready. She also told me that the only "approximate release date" she could tell me would be around end of march, because the hardware dept. doesn't get more specific about it, even to her. I think this is quite good news, don't you think? (despite of the fact, that on the glossy high quality AmiJoe-Flyer, that was on display there a release date of December `99 is mentioned)

Well its good to feel assured about it! But on the other hand, yet
another min. four weeks to creep around with my lame 1230... :-(
I really hope the WOS-compatibility issue will not delay the thing any
more!!
Come on Joe! :)

Don't ever believe what a salesperson tells you.
They'll tell you what you want to hear to make
the sale. Good or bad, that's their job.
I certainly hope AmiJoe ships and guessed that
software would be a big holdup for them. They
should ship it with PowerUp drivers. Amiga
has chosen it as the PPC standard, we don't need
a different option for every board and neither
do software vendors. The market is far too small
for such divisions. They need to adhere to
standards set/chosen by Amiga.
Any new amigas made should NOT ship without a PPC,
CDROM & HD-Floppy drive. The 68K should be the
option, not the base.

Don't you mean Warp Up drivers ?

In reply to Comment 2 (Jaeson Koszarsky):
Amiga chose WarpUp, NOT PowerUp...

In reply to Comment 2 (Jaeson Koszarsky):
If the cards ship with their own software rather than WarpUP then they will
be unsupportable unless they provide out-of-the-box compatibility with the
existing kernels. Not only would they be released with no software (as
existing PPC software would not work on them) but developers like myself
would find it very hard to support them. Even if Sam Jordan wrote a WarpUP
HAL for the cards, the PPC market is falling to pieces as it is and another
incompatible kernel will destroy it.

In reply to Comment 5 (Chris):
AFAIK, Metabox won't deliver the boards with a third kernel. They wanted to, but some well placed persons dissaded them to do so.

From where do you get this information? What is your reliable source, or is it just pure speculation? No offense, but I've never read anything other than speculation about exactly what software they are gonna ship. Until I hear something public from the maker, it seems rather pointless to start worrying about it.

From an Amiga software company which is working with them.

No, Amiga have choosen WarpUP as the PPC Standard,
and they should ship it with these... anything else
would be madness... especially as all upcoming
great software which could profit a lot of the
G3 is using WarpUP...

> An Amiga software company
Yeah? Really? Which one?
If no one actually working on it has announced it, it's simply not reliable. Outside of official circles, you hear all kinds of stuff, most of which is crap...
I don't mind speculation, but when it comes from such unsubstantiated sources as 'a company' or 'it is possible that they would do x', it'd be nice if people would say that, and not present it as fact ;)

So what is your source (Hyperion?), are you under any sort of NDA :0)
Anyway I guess you are right that they will use warpup it would be crazy if not.

Just to say that Ben Yoris has always had some very "official" sources... and in fact, his "rumours" have often been true.

An interesting mail that I received from Metabox :
Do you intend to take user's requests in consideration ?
>
Sure.
> Or do you already have 3D GFX, G4 and USB solutions to announce later ?
>
The circuitry is already prepared for G4 and I guess we will announce
them very soon when we have parts for production. GFX has a very
limited choice because of the behavior of most chip manufacturers and
mechanical requirements. But this is solved either.
