Steve Dowe writes: Slashdot again headlines the Amiga, mainly regarding recent annoucenments about the Y2k show and Amiga's development machines. Reading the followup postings, though, it is not immediately clear if such coverage is always a good thing. Here's a direct link to the article.

Wow, alot of Amiga bashing going on there..what a change! In the recent past Amiga enjoyed a fairly favorable response from the slashdot croud...
BUT...
Read a little closer and what do you see? Aaaahh.. Slash-Dot is going through a dumbing down process. News for nerds? Might have been in the past. It sures seems from what I just read that it has become "News for Idiots".

Fully agreed!
Amiga was good for Slashdot while it was related to Linux.
They´re just another bunch o´lameasses... :/

This seems to me to be a good example of the sort of impassioned fanboys who are a huge part of the linux explosion. "iF iT aIn'T *LINUX* iT aIn'T KEWL!!" That sort of childish nonsense. It's pretty off-putting and distressingly common these days. This is why I use Slashdot as a news source but mostly ignore the comments.

...and it also seems like none of them actually HAVE seen an Amiga in action lately...

Mostly a bunch of clueless zealots believing that Amiga Inc is relaunching
the A500. Not very much to read there :)

When I read the attacks on Amigas on Slashdot I always wonder why they never mention the Amiga's software (not OS).
Could it be that unless you're running a web server than the Amiga has more and better software available even now than Linux?
If Amiga brings the current software with it to the new platform than it will be ahead of Be and Linux\Unix. Software development on BeOS has been surprisingly slow.

Linux is enjoying a mass of development and popularity in every department.
You'll have to take what the Linux Community says with a pinch of salt whilst they're heads grow. They bash the same Microsoft stuff, Apple stuff, original Unix (not so much so, but still), it's probably only until the growth dust settles. Buy hey, far beit the Amiga Community crap another OS (sarcy I know, but true).

Well, I was entertained at the least.
Slashdot has become a victim of its own hype. Once a site becomes known as the place where the cognoscenti frequent, then every poser with a Debian CD and enough sense to figure out where the 'power' button is begins to think that it's the place for them. "I'm a Linux user, so I must be cool. Therefore, I must go hang with the other cool people. And hey, that weird way of spelling, capitalizing, and using numbers in place of letters looks interesting; I think I'll copy it."
Note the misspelling of the .net in the address... email-harvesting web spiders, take that. :P

A lot of people wrongly assume that Linux is the apex of computer development - IE there's no better way of developing software.
That may be true, however I think there is still room for other solutions to the computer software/hardware problem - which may or may not be the new amiga. I hope it is :). The reason why is simple enough - Linux (and yes I use linux at hana.maybe.net) is pretty damn hard to use...

Don't mind the slashdotters. Linux geeks are Linux geeks. On the other hand, I can sort of relate to their "not again"-feeling. Amiga has had a few too many "comebacks" already. I just hope with all my heart that this time it amounts to something, and we can show those Linuxers how our system can run on top of Linux and still beat the hell out of it in performance...

I hope as much as anyone that something worthwhile will come out of this. However, as Windows (originally) ran on top of MSDOS and was a significant performance hit, and Elate will run on top of (fill in your OS here) and take a significant performance hit. The lower level the calls it makes, the more efficient it can be - the lamer the OS it runs atop of, the less efficient it can be. Now, GEOS was an exception, it didn't run "on top of" the C64 OS because the 64 didn't have one. And Workbench was so tightly integrated with the Amiga-OS and -DOS that it worked pretty seamlessly. Other than not being able to run two Workbench operations simultaneously - and I don't count doing something in a CLI window as a Workbench operation! (admittedly some WB replacements did allow two or more operations.... :) There's just no way that it can be endlessly portable without being another layer on top that's dependent on what's below, and the more it tightly integrates to hardware layers or even software abstraction layers on top of the hardware, the less portable it will be. PaulT, an Amiga realist (possible?)

Well even if it runs a WebServer, I've been running Apache for years on my 030 A4K! Heck I may have 2 PC's (win95/win98/Turbo Linux 6) next to the old girl, but I still use it for Scanning using ImageFX, acting as the LAN Gateway using MiamiDx (which I consider is the greatest example of Amiga Programmer Innovation) which runs Apache, QMail and an IRC Daemon.

Well, apparently Elate performs surprisingly well on top of another OS. At least in the demo Tao gave for the press, they were running Elate on top of Linux in application mode on a Dell laptop and they were doing things you could only dream of doing in native Linux, like running numerous Java apps and MPEG animations at the same time without any hardware acceleration and still not getting any slowdown at all. I think it's got something to do with the architecture of Elate, ie it somehow accesses the hardware without going through the underlying OS. That's one of the best parts of Elate, IMHO. Many Windows and Linux people might just buy it simply to give their own system a boost to a whole new level.

Is this OS not actually an OS, but something more like a Java machine (not a Java machine, but like it)?
I must admit that I haven't seen all the documents so don't quote me, but it seems to be like an emulator of some sort. If this is the case will there be an ACTUAL OS available in the future, and this is simply a bridge to its destination or the future of Amiga?
