People in comp.sys.amiga.misc noticed that Amiga's website now includes adverts. When I visited, I saw a Power Computing ad, but it is not obvious if these are paid ones or not. Any comments?

Yes, three banners. The first one (left hand) a rotating
AnimGIF, showing "CyberstormPPC - CyberVisionPPC - PowerUP",
linking to DCE (licenced to continue production of phase 5
hardware).
Two retailer banners - Vesalia and PowerComputing. AFAIK,
both are main distributors for PowerUP hardware.
The banners are not changing.
Marketing to make people more aware of the PPC hardware?

Hope this isn't the "New Amiga Website" that was mentioned in the exec update.... ; ) No really, I guess they realized that by going to Amiga.com, there wasn't a quick way for people to buy Amiga stuff. I'm hoping in the future that Amiga.com will have an online store or something where we can buy all things Amiga directly from the site.

Suddenly, I'm not even sure if this is really news. I checked from home, and
saw three banners instead of one (I am using WebWasher at work). And I had a
strange feeling of deja vu that I didn't have when I posted the original
article. So this might indeed be old news, and not a new development, as I
thought it was. Perhaps I shouldn't trust c.s.a.m. anymore. :)

re: the ads - As far as selling Amigas direct at the site, if they want to respect their dealer network they'd better be careful. I suppose that in the really old days that dealers and resellers had the option to place ads in "Commodore" magazine, but selling direct and undercutting dealers would be a BAD thing. If they're just supporting sellers by allowing ads, then no problem.
On the other hand, does this reflect yet another about face (YAAF) on whether PowerPC will be an "approved" solution? The biggest faux pas that the succession of owners like ESCOM and GatesWay made was to de-certify the PPC as a next gen Amiga solution, which put significant clamps on PPC sales which obviously didn't help the future of Phase5.... I know I held off on an upgrade because the new mother company wouldn't commit to a future. Of course, Phase5 "Osborned" itself by announcing that all new machines were going to be G4's, then not being able to ship G4 machines. Everybody naturally waited to order the better machines, cash flow went to zero, poof!

I think it's a good sign. If the ads are paid adds, that means the
companies doing the paying believe in the market. If they are not
paid ads, then Amiga wants to help dealers sell their products...
You have to start somewhere on marketing your products, and
Amiga seem to be trying to get distribution channels working
and helping their sales...this is good.
I remember when Escom wanted people to start selling Amigas, the
requirement they had was that a dealer had to order about
$25,000 worth of merchandise(or something like that)
.....that isn't a particularly good way to start up a company
that had just gone bankrupt...
It looks good so far, solidify the base users, create an upgrade
path, sign developers, and get the distribution channels going....
If the Amiga retains its incredible quality of ease, power, stability,
and reasonable cost for its classic line, and new Amigas
, there is a good chance of this business plan working....
(I am no business expert mind you, but it sure
sounds good now to me)

The ads have been on the Amiga.de web site for several months now. They weren't on the Amiga.com site until quite recently (the Amiga.com site was linked to Amiga.de except for the main page and index).
I believe they are one of Petro's marketing ideas to keep the German operation going (they were there before the Amino deal if I remember correctly).

I wouldn`t care if the companies had to pay for the adverts or not.
The fact is, these companies have stayed by the Amiga platform for so
many years in the face of falling sales and no direction from AI /
Escom / GW2k, and I think (if it was a free advert) it`s a great
gesture of thanks by Amiga Inc to add a direct link.
If the adverts have been paid for, I hope it was a minimal amount :-)
Of course they are businesses, but would your typical hard-headed
businessman have stuck with the Amiga ? That is where I think they
deserve recognition - they haven`t followed the sheep (PC vendors) and
left us with nothing.
Well done AI, and thanks to all the companies that stayed with the
Amiga and brought us to where we are today :-)
