I'm not a developer but I am interested in the devbox - at 750US$ it is not unreasonable, but I am worried about the new OS. That it is running initially on Linux is not a problem, afterall there are a lot of drivers there and presumably the new OS can access them?
But what of the new OS - I am unclear what has been seen at St Louis. All I can gather is that TAOS was showing what it had previously showed (ie its windowing system and the bouncing ball).
Could someone who was at the show give some detail about what stage the new OS is at, or what stage they think it is at. If they are going to sell the devbox this month, what appears to be on it?
The strategy does not appear to me bad, even if future amiga boxes are only generic thrid party offerings, but god I want a decent operating system, slim, stable and amigan - Please could someone fill out some details even if based merely on appearance and deduction.

Well, thats right, you are not their taget... Most people who prgram and make a decent living know that this is chump change and an easy buy. Remember this is a developer system and not a toy to play games on....

What the hell do you want? $50?
If Amiga is going to woo the "big" companies to produce software for them, they
need to know how to do it, and need something to test on. Compare this to the
PlayStation2 devbox, which was about $2000.
Its not aimed at consumers, its for companies who produce software. The
pricepoint is not an issue to them, as long as its not, say, $10,000. Even our
small Amiga companies can afford it. Even if it was aimed at consumers, $750 is
a decent price for what it is.
If they had given it away for free there would have been someone who would have
stood up and complained that it was underspecced.
Support them for once. Or at least give them a chance.

Yes, it's 'cheap' for the more serious developers. But I afraid many of the developers of share-/gift-/freeware apps (and there are quite a few 'essential' prg's, which we used for years...) have to wait until such a version of dev-sys appears that run on their _exsisting_ machines, let it be PC or Amiga(PPC). (Though, it will happen sooner or later.) And not mentioning demo-writers! Usually they are those who makes the best demonstrations, but, usually again, from hobby. Though, we need some cool demos soon...
The other thing. AIK, the new OS is supposed to be installable on 'all' sort of machines. My question: how could the compatibility problems appear if only one setup(!) is used during the development (of the OS itself, too)?

Did anyone actually see the Dev Box on Sunday? Wasn't it supposed to be there on Sunday?

I was at the A2K Show both days and at Saturdays banquet. It was a GREAT time!
$750.00 is not a bad price either! I spent that much on a Power Tower ($200.00) + Zorro4 ($225.00) + Cyber 3D-64 Card (299.95) + CyberGrafX-CD Software (#33.00) for my A1200/B1260/64RAM machine! I think the NEW amiga OS will be able to run on a 500Pent PC just fine.
I'd still like to buy the BOXER with PPC when its ready! I think the NEW Amiga OS will be ready before the BOXER ever is but I hope I am wrong. LONG LIVE THE AMIGA!!!
