Teemu I. Yliselä writes: Tao Group has announced that the Japanese Weblogic Corporation will be developing a custom VHDL module specifically for accelerating Intent's 2D performance. Intent is Tao's advanced multimedia toolkit used also in Ami. Read more below.
VHDL IP Module specifically targeting Tao’s graphical libraries.

Reading, UK, May 10th 2000 -- Tao Group and Tokyo based Weblogic Corporation, a leading Mobile Group Messaging Service Developer for Internet enabled cellular phones and LSI design specialist, today announced an alliance to develop a custom VHDL module providing hardware 2D acceleration for the intent(TM) Media System.

Today’s announcement highlights Tao’s ability to provide the next generation of mobile network-enabled devices with true multi-media capability.

The partnership will be licensing this technology and LSI IP to manufacturers incorporating Tao’s advanced graphics technologies in the new generation of consumer network appliances.

This is nice - I hope the new Amigas have this bit of logic embedded into their graphics chips. Fast hardware based 2D graphics would be great for the Amiga, instead of doing everything in software.
Does this Intent library have 3D functionality?

So, we will have a powerful Blitter! (Surely better than those in today's VGA-chips, to make sense.) I miss only some sort of a Copper yet!
(About 3D: left it to its masters, NVidia, 3DFX, etc.)

How come the Weblogic website is under construction? No corroborating
information there.
I couldn't find the announcement on the Tao Website under "News"..
what url contains TAOs statement that they are working
with Weblogic?
The announcement you quoted didn't say anything about Amiga
being involved....though it would not be ruled out...
any more info?

2D graphics I think are very important (especially for us video fx people :)).
I am wondering if you could make some custom i/o processor for an advanced 3D chip (Geforce/3dfx etc etc) to not only manage memory, but also I/O - which is really all the blitter was on the Amiga right?

So that we could move all kinds of data around the screen
without redrawing the screen...If we could have an advanced
2d blitter that would be cool,,,how about an advanced 3D blitter?
even cooler..... that could work with video too, no?

I believe all the blitter did was fill in boxes and polygons - which is useful for doing 3d - without textures.
Ironically the blitter is only really faster then the CPU on slower (A500 slow...) Amiga's. Or in other words having a blitter on a modern machine would probably be useless.
I believe the Amiga's 2d power (and yes I find even an old A3000 ECS chipset can still do some cool things a new PC can't do) comes from being a planar gfx system, and from having the co-processer (copper) - which I believe is just a series of bitplane/memory pointers that was actually don't by the CIA chips.

Better don't put your nose things you aren't familiar with...
Blitters is mainly for mem-copy and 2D-acceleration.
There is a blitter in every latest gfx chips. Amiga's blitter is only slow now because of it's 16-bits @7MHz. Now think about 64/128-bits ones @200 MHz...
And the Copper is much more than just a series of pointers, just ask an 'Amigan'. And CIA's has nothing to do with it and the bit-planes.
