Press Release

Amiga is Back, and will change computing forever, again.

Amiga the creators of Multi-Media computing, have announced the release of their developer kit for Amiga, Linux, and Java developers.

June 3, 2000 – Snoqualmie, WA – Amiga announces the release of the Amiga Software Developers Kit, the first new product to introduce the next generation Amiga platform.

The Amiga Software Developers Kit provides the initial tools and examples for developers to create exciting multi-media content for multiple devices and computing environments. The unique strength of the New Amiga comes from the partnership with the Tao Group in Reading England providing a foundation where developers are able to take advantage of a ubiquitous computing environment.

In 1984 Amiga established what is know today as multi-media. As a result of this, Amiga systems are used around the world by leading film studios, animators, and in mission critical applications. Using this as the foundation, the Amiga is moving forward by creating multi-media for numerous devices and computing environments in the home, in the office and beyond.

The Amiga OS is capable of being self-hosted, and sitting on top of other operating systems. A single application is capable of running on X86, Power PC, M.core, ARM, StrongArm, MIPs, SH3/4, and others. In a hosted environment the new Amiga runs on versions of Linux, Windows 95,98/NT, Windows CE, OS/9, QNX4, and others to be announced.

The new OS also embraces the Java language in a new, powerful and compliant way. The intent Java Technology Edition from Tao is world renowned for its speed and compact execution of Java applications. With the new environment, developers will be able to take advantage of both Java, and portable assembler coding.

“Today we take the first step towards the future” Said Bill McEwen President/CEO of Amiga, Inc. “The new Amiga SDK provides an environment where the best developers in the world can build exciting applications, that can transcend hardware limitations. Today Amiga developers can be joined by Linux and Java developers in an environment that provides the foundation for the delivery of future content.”

“Tao has been talking for some time now about our developments to create Digital Heaven™ and we see Amiga and its community as a fundamental part of the new order that can make it happen and take an industry lead. With the sheer tenacity and the many qualities of McEwen and his Amiga team, the world is going to see Amiga as a Premier Brand for connected digital appliances,” said Francis Charig Chairman of the Tao-Group.

For the developer, the new SDK creates a single environment that is scalable from handheld devices, such as cell phones upwards New versions of the kit later in the year will introduce many new media features. Both the current and future versions will enable compact, high performance and robust media solutions to be used across a broad range of devices using identical binaries..

The New Amiga SDK is available through local retailers for $ 99.00, and from the Amiga web site, Amazon.com and other sources available soon. A version via a Japanese distributor will be announced shortly.

Can I comment here that many people like writing Amiga software, and
AFAIK the new Ami does not have an Amiga API.

In reply to Comment 17 (nOw2):
I got the sense at Amiga2K that between the new AmigaOS/Elate and their work with Met@box and DCE, there will be a migration path, and with 'classic' PPC systems that can use both original AmigaOS and the new one, that we could have the best of both worlds. I think the only reason why there won't be a new AmigaOS/Elate for 68K is because Motorola won't let Tao do one (they are a part owner of Tao and stipulated that 68K was "not an option" for Elate). It was made clear at Amiga2K that between DCE and Met@box cards that had PPC for classic Amigas, you'd be able to run the new AmigaOS on your classic Amiga, making it yet again able to morph and stay current.

Well this is great but the only problem is that I'm not quite sure of the use of this SDK, is it on OS or just a program! I was looking forward to a release of AOS4 but when the announced a linux partnership I was afraid of a fiasco! I glad they took Elate OS which is pretty cool technology.
I'll gladly purchase the SDK provided they wont stop at that!
Where can I find picture of the demos made at A2k of the new SDK??

Remember, unlike every other 'Amiga Inc.' that has come along in the past couple of years, this one has actually delivered something! That the OS has mutated a bit isn't as important as the fact that something *new* is out there! We can't sneer at the competition forever with our 68060's! The classic Amiga may be perfect in many ways, but having a new one doesn't take anything away from the 'tried and true'. We can't expect the dwindling Amiga developer community to continue to provide excellent software at next to nothing for income (while we complain about the price and surf eBay for used stuff). This way they (amiga developers) can earn a living at making *Amiga* software and not have to work at a PC-software company to pay the bills!

This is very exciting indeed. But...
What do the Java & Linux developers think about this?
How are they going to know about this?
How's the marketing being done?
Sorry for so many questions but this needs to be known to every devoloper out there, and I think marketing is the key issue.

Congratulations to the Amiga, Tao team and others involved! :)
- How are they going to know about this?
First, there should be something on Slashdot.org soon.
P.S. : Emmett Plant of /. has also done an interview with Bill and Fleecy. So stay tuned!
Sincerely, Mike Bouma.

I hope there is more in the June update by Mr. McEwan, but nevertheless,
there is actually a product being offered. So, it appears to be
moving....the underpinnings have to be strong before a good
hardware product is produced, but it looks like it is a good
business plan so far.....
I must admit, Escom did make new A1200's and was contracting out
for A4000's, and 1438's and 1738's monitors, and AmigaOS 3.1 before
they went belly-up....
The attractiveness of a system that uses Java, and Linux is good,
it will bring in new blood. Amiga developers can introduce
Linux users/Java users to their strengths...i.e. is there
anything like a Pagestream on Linux? or ImageFX?(photogenics, yes,
but it is also amiga based, no?).
Since elate/intent will be better than Java/Linux, the Java/Linux
crowd can migrate over to elate/intent...maybe if an Amigatized
GUI for Elate/intent is realized by lots of Java/Linux companies,
many Amiga users may use their apps.....
Pretty encouraging stuff....Certainly much better than Gateway's
offering.....
Hang in there...we may be in for another big spin....

I just want to praise Amiga for getting some real work done! And
you're doing a fine job, which I amongst others really appreciate!
Well done and keep up the hard (but I am sure it is rewarding) work!
:)

While this (hopefully) is good news, I still miss a great amount of
professionalism at Amiga! I just went to the Amiga homepage and clicked on
Developer Net ending up at a (non working) directory index :(
What a great first impression for curious potential developers coming from
linux or whatever!
Not to mention those little flaws in their latest press release on their
homepage (well, maybe Voyagers fault :) .
On the other hand at last they managed to reunite "www.amiga.com" and
"amigacorp.codemain.com". And amiga.indexc.com no longer contains any
Amiga site (they should sue the providers for still using the name :-) .
Still I fear they MUST change their admins if they want their developer
database to be professional and - more important - secure!

Where do the Amiga advantages come into this? Tao's OE is something
completely different, running on another OS on a foriegn architecture.
Don't get me wrong, AmigaOS 3.5+AGA+68k is hardly the way to stay -
but AmigaOS 4+RTG+PPC?

WHY can't you DEVIL WORSHIPPERS make the simple step of logic that asks "WHAT DOES THIS SYSTEM HAVE IN COMMON WITH THE CLASSIC AMIGA!" Fleecey and Bill want to turn you all into PC Dummies, and instead of asking WHAT makes it an Amiga besides the NAME you're bouncing up and down excitably saying "I WANT TWO!" Typical CHRISTIAN idiocy!!!
