This is already being extensively covered everywhere else, including here and here in the unmoderated section, but I thought I'd just mention once again that Microsoft has been ordered to split up into two separate companies. So, what do you think does this mean for Amiga? Or does it have any real relevance at all?

I don't know where it is on the 'net, but I know the US Navy found that one out the hard way when they tried to run one of their ships on NT and (of course) it crashed while they were at sea and they had to get towed home. :) Guess those old mainframes weren't so bad after all, eh?

Am I the only one who doesn't care about M$, and just wishes that the goverment
would leave it alone? Honestly, we're living proof they are not as powerful
as some would say. I don't use any M$ software and I'm doing fine, I'll be
doing even better when I get my NG Amiga. Let the lemmings, I mean consumers
purchase the lowest common denominator of computers if they want, real computer
hobbiests have alternatives. Next week, next month or next year the computer
landscape will change, and those in power will be old news. If the
US government wanted to really show their distaste for M$ they should stop
using his products! Stop putting the sad excuse for an OS on the governments
computers!

Agreed. I think the Redmond ladies and gents are going to be too busy either in De Nile (not just a river in Egypt anymore) about the Gov, or if their faces are finally bruised on appeal (who knows what will happen, don't listen to the PR of either side, judges are a legion unto themselves and answerable to really not anyone) they will be too busy with moving vans to mess around with our friends up in Snoqualmie.
Meanwhile, as long as Amiga can keep making great alliances and moving forward (the recen Corel announcement of losses and layoffs doesn't fill me with confidence about them, though) they will succeed, let's be realistic, they aren't going to eliminate WinBlows. But if they succeed as establishing themselves as *the* cool development platform, and are stable and reliable, watch out - the basic computer user might stick with W95/98/NT/whatever while the real power computer users would move up to Amiga/Elate/Linux/Whatever.
Exciting times, to say the least.

What will be interesting about the split is where Mr. Gates will end up. He is only allowed to be on the board of one company.
If he goes to the apps company then it may signal to the industry that he doesn't have much faith in Windows as a product when it has to fend for itself.
I have high hopes for the new Amiga system, and I think that the recent judgement and the amazing compatibility of the system will help them gain a foothold in the OS market even if they don't dominate it or at least be as big in the computer industry as Commodore-Amiga Inc. used to be.
I came to the Amiga FROM PCs in '97 I think that people will do likewise with AMIE (or whatever it's called). Or maybe I'm just a freak!!

Once M$ starts the appeals process it could be tied up for years before anything
really happens. And if George W. would win the election this fall that could change things
entirely. He has already stated he was against the governments actions against M$, but
did want limitations placed on their business practices (but no split-up). And M$ has
been a fairly consistent contributor to both parties, but I expect the GOP to receive
the bulk of Mr. Gates support this year.
M$ has so igrained themselves into life that they will never completly go away, but
great inroads can be made by the right companies at the right time. I believe Amiga/Tao
can be the one to make a difference. What we've seen so far has been quite good considering
the short time they have been working together. The next htree to four months are going to make
those accomplishments look small.
I can't wait!

I don't think this will affect amiga in the short run (after all Amiga Inc. really doesn't have a product yet...). Currently it stands to affect Mac/Linux/Netscape users more then anyone. In the long run it could allow entry into the OS market which is where Amiga Inc. will step in (hopefully).

Well, both the Microsoft split and the new Amiga system are far
away from completed. But some years from now, I think it could be
possible that Amiga gains on the split (if it occurs) since the
companies then can't be too big and they have to start to work
with each other with products to make common interfaces and
solutions.

Well, the most important thing about the split
is the weight it adds to the slow opening of
the OS market, we appear to be witnessing
currently. The more negative press MS gets, the
more alternatives will be investigated around
the world. Apparantly, so far the MS PR machine
has been able to counter balance the low quality
of Windows. But with splits, Linux and other MS
problems, things are hopefully getting easier
for new and exciting alternatives - you guessed it,
such as the new Amiga.

In reply to Comment 16 (Red Moose):
I'd been working on PCs since '93, first with Dos and Win 3.1 then with Win95. Before that I had been a prolific BASIC author, but I'd found that the PC offerings were bland and inelegant. Then in '96 I heard about Blitz basic and how it had been used to make commercail products namely Worms, so the following year I bought a second hand A500 thinking that Amigas hadn't changed since the late 80's, I found out otherwise trying to run anything decent on 1MB so the following year I bought an A1200HD off a friend and haven't looked back. I lost my interest in Blitz but found out all the other things that I just couldn't do before (Digital Art).I only ever use PCs for the internet now (and the odd game of X-wing). But all that will change when I get my Amiga online later this month.
I have been forced to use microsoft products as they slowly kicked the alternatives out of the marketplace for the past 8 years. Microsoft has never been an inovator, try to name a product that M$ has invented, even DOS was based upon CP/M. It would end up getting to a stage where nothing new would be developed because people would worry about M$ cloning thier product with an inferior one then kicking them out the marketplace.

This doesn't mean that the MS monopoly is over. It doesn't mean that Linux, BeOS, MacOS, AmigaOS (or any other OS:es) suddenly will gain marketshares. All the MS products will still be around, but IE will come from 'M$1' and Windows from 'M$2'. This doesn't mean much at all, except for the shareholders.
And this isn't the first time the US government splits a company in halfs, though this split is the biggest one so far. And there are examples that shows companies actually GROWING FASTER and BECOMING STRONGER after a split. Benefits from specialization and a more focused business ...

In reply to Comment 14 (Mathew):
I'm going to give it four months tops. Right now major companies have their products and are building their partnerships. Also, there are some major companies out there creating hand held devices that host the internet, email, and whatever else is on the web through an integrated system. What's the OS? Good question. From what I've seen, it's been Linux, OS/2 (aka Warp9 or something), NetBSD, something called frebird, and a handful of others just to touch the tip of the iceberg.
With products already setting up to hit the market place in this years 4th quarter (PS2, Dolphin, Gateway/AOL Web appliances), this will be a very "Microsoft shattering" year for them. Some of the more exlusive computer users are using things like Access 2000 and finding that they have gone beyond the limitations and resorted to using just a spreadsheet program with extensive macros. True web designers won't touch anything that Microsoft creates anymore due to the extremely bloated output of the html export.
Most of the consumer industry no longer cares on whether or not it has Windows on it, as long as they have a mouse pointer and can connect to the internet plus play games is all that they want, in a nutshell at least. With about 45% of the consumer market purchasing a computer system for the first time, they couldn't care less if it has windows on it. To some, the Amiga OS3.5 would be windows, or the Mac OS8 would be windows, just as long as it ran the software that they wanted.
Four months might not be that long, but if you watch the market strategy and the way things are going even with the major corporations like AOL, Dell, Compaq, Sony, HP, and many others... the computer industry will eventually boil down to nothing but services and offerings much like that of cellular/digital phones have become.
The Amiga has a very strong foothold and will not back down for anything. Andy teaches us that your not to late to build the userbase. In short, if you have a company that is looking to get into the fast paced type of market where the cash flow will never end due to the ongoing services, then now is the time to jump on to the wild rollercoaster which we live in this digital age.
Being at the forefront of this age, I'm watching most of this happen before my eyes.

Relevance to nothing, I think. It "aint a-gonna happen" either. M$ is to frigging big; they can keep this issue in the courts forever. And there's enough stupid people backing them. Yes, I said stupid! If you hear MISTER Balmer's statement that the issue is about preserving innovation and competition, and you don't feel a sense of rage, you've got to be thick. They've very clearly demonstrated their contempt for those principles by eliminating both in their field.

I think Gates couldn't care any less about the Windows OS and he'll go to the internet /applications side of it. The look and feel of windows already is sadly the foundation of even the new Linux OS's from evryone from Redhat to Corel, so Microsoft will keep the same look and feel. They will technically state that their new Windows-like product for internet appliances is merely an environment and not an "OS" or pull something of that like on us. Bill Gates will not suffer very much anyway. The money will come from applications, but at least he won't be the only player in the game now... We should make sure to keep down, so that he won't try anything sneaky- that means educating the public about quality products instead of the crap that he's been handing them.

You're quite so honestly right dear Eugene.
But lets think of something to keep the Amiga going. ``Amiga -just-

What can Amiga manufacturers as well as users -ie people like `them',

Dear Mathew's quite right I think.
Who cares about mediocrity especially when it is dominating
everything and everyone ?
Lets the Amiga (and the Amigans) be a `scarcity' in their
own rights. Like a mystic cult or a secret brotherhood
perhaps. Give a damn care if no one knows the Amiga, or does not
buy her. As long as I know the phenomena, and I am happy using
the system, why should I worry about others who are Wintel users (or
lets say `are used by the Wintel' industry ...)
What most concerns me personally, is the fact that a machine
has to sell a considerable number and share a fair amount of the
market in order for it (and its users to continue using it alike) to
survive the tight competition. Then I both want my Amiga to be
`very personal' as well as go on being produced and be sold `normaly'
so that as long as I am able to make use of a computer, I can be
sure of being able to put my hands on my beloved Amiga models.
To the above fact, lets add the `software availability' truth. That
does need `market support' and continuity as well.
For the time being, as long as `old' A500, A600, A1200, A4000 or
any other Amiga models and units are working perfectly, I have no
special worries over the issue. But with the rather hard usage
and strain I put on my own Amiga machines (and other Amigans I am
sure are no exception to the rule) I sometimes feel really sad and
left out in the cold if some day I'll have to be in bed with another
computer but the Great Ami-queen ...

Break Micro$uck into MANY parts not just 2. Slame Billy Boy in JAIL as well as the NEW Chairman for Piracy! I don't believe in the Government, if I did then I'd say this will work. I'm Thrilled yet I know it won't mount to much. I hope I'm wrong. Sadly, it's TRUE, Winsuck does dominate the World. There is a way for that to change. Get the Classic AMIGA & New AMIGA into people's homes with a GREAT OS that Works (Afterall, Winsuck sure doesn't!) It'll take about 15 years probably, maybe a bit more. But I believe is Magic, & I think AI will make it happen. I sure hope so. I HATE the Pile of **** I have sitting next to my AMIGA but I had to buy it... Go Bill! Go Bill!! (Get your mind OUT of the Gutter! I Mean OUR Bill!)
Gates can suck my ....!! Winsuck is Soooooo Cool, you HAVE to reset it at LEAST 2 times a day if you USE it. 1 time a Week if you DON'T use it.
