Hyperion software will port Soldier of Fortune to Amiga and Mac : Comment 22 of 66ANN.lu

Soldier of Fortune is a great game, I've played it on the PC and it really kicks ass!!
Unfortunately it kind of sucks in multiplayer, but it's a great violent singleplayer game.
It's great that Hyperion ports to both classic Amigas and the new ones.
I'm very interested in the new Amigas :-)
I have a ppc 604 200 mhz without 3d card.
As far as the news value goes, I've known about this for some time now.
I guessed the developer would be Hyperion, there is actually information about the possible
Amiga conversion on the developer of soldier of fortunes homepage and as far as i
know the info's been there for a couple of months.
I wasn't sure how common this knowledge were but i E-mailed Amiga nutta a while back
but he doesnt seem to update his page anymore.
This is really a great game, thanks Hyperion!!!!!!
If Hyperion keeps up the good work the New Amiga will have a chance of survival.

: Quake 3 Arena),
You would fail for most of the titles above. Just believe me.
We could go for Diablo, but I never liked that game. Of course, its
unimportant *which* game we licence, there is always someone that wants the
other one. I actually was expecting this post. A few days ago I read "why these
old games, why don't the licence Soldier of Fortune". Now its "SOF is too
demanding", and I see a list of games that starts with one that is actually
older then Heretic II. Age does not say its not quality, of course :)
In the end, its our decision. Like it or not.
Shogo will probably be slower than 10 FPS? Actually no.
Perhaps you should leave the worring about hardware to us. We carry the risk.
A big risk for sure.

Hi!
Well, I had the chance to talk with the guy from
Elbox at the show. The transfer rate will be the
same like for the current Cyberstorm PPC to
Cybervision PPC Bus. But the transfer rate
is not the major problem for 3D currently,
anyways... the major problem is the slow fillrate
of the Permedia 2... and the Voodoo (even Voodoo 3)
has a MUCH MUCH higher fillrate.

Hi!
Starcraft ? Good joke. Only I fear it was not
meant as a joke... well, Blizzard are a very
- hmmm, how do you say "arrogant" without saying
it too negative ? :) - company... I doubt they
would give a license if they do not have
an incredible amount of guaranteed sales...
Raven/Activision on the other hand are very
NICE companies appearently (now licensing
the third game to Hyperion already !!!) - well,
of COURSE money surely also plays a role in
this nicety. And Soldier of Fortune is one
of the TOP GAMES for PC currently. Potential
top seller :)
BTW: Heard of the PCI ? This would be the IDEAL
solution for 3D stuff... and the most important
thing for the Amiga currently *is* a new
GFX Board... it is a fact that for highend
games the fillrate of the Permedia 2 currently
is the limiting factor...
Quake... it was 10 fps as it is 68k-only...
try Quake on a PowerPC :) Shogo of course
WILL support the PowerPC ... so you cannot
compare like this (sure, I do not doubt that
it is more performance-intensive than Quake,
but I am sure that it will be playable - actually
I have reason for telling so, as I already
saw it running on Amiga, a Beta version :) It
was short on display at the Show...)

In reply to Comment 15 (Remco Komduur):
Soldier of Fortune will NOT be pathetic on the current hardware provided it comes with a decent PCI graphics-card.
Elbox already have 2D drivers for Voodoo 3.
And guess who'll be doing the Warp3D drivers for it? We estimate this will take around two months to do because the API needs to be rewritten. Elbox promised us a prototype within 10 days.
How do you plug in the PCI slots in a A4000? Simple, you remove the Zorro 3 daughtherboard and replace it with a new daugtherboard that has Z3 and PCI slots.
At this point this can only be done for Micronik and Elbox/Powertowers because these are the most common towers. Nothing prevents a similar procedure on different towers.
Again, the transfer rate of 22MB might be "pathetic" but it 1) beats the proprietary slot of the Cyberstorm/BlizzardPPC which only can do around 18MB/S and in any case is more than sufficient.
On A4000 it will be more BTW.

If you dont like it, no-one is forcing you to buy it. If Hyperion want to, and can port the game, and rekon they can make a reasonable return, then I don't see a problem. No-one is forcing you to buy it or even like it, but bad mouthing software companies who have done NOTHING (and I say that with confidence) wrong, is just a touch pathetic.

But the ZIII daughterboard is completely passive hardware -- the

the Elbox PCI thing is just a ZII to PCI bridge... In the end, if
the A1200 adapter plugs in the CPU slot, the A4000 version will end up

| If you dont like it, no-one is forcing you to buy it.
| If Hyperion want to, and can port the game, and rekon they can make
| a reasonable return, then I don't see a problem.
The problem is there won't be reasonable return: the game requires an
hardware (PPC card) that is no longer manufactured, plus leverages on
the availability of not one but TWO not-yet-ready products. At the end
there will be the usual whine and moan about the fact that the amiga
owners are not profitable enough to develop for.

And the usual zealot misunderstands. The point is not in the merit or
demerit of the game company and is not company related (or atleast
marginally -- if I had an amiga game company I'd be trying to license
Starcraft, Diablo, Command & Conquer or similar, and not certainly
Quake 3 Arena), but based on the sheer fact that even the high-powered
amigas do have very poor 3d hardware (either permedia or s3 virge)
whereas the game actually needs decent hardware aceleration to be
playable.

| I find it amusing that people on the other side of the planet are
| ranting about why we are porting Soldier of Fortune. Mister Rocati,
| give us some credit here.
It's not a problem with hyperion software or whatever, the problem is
with the requirement of the software compared with the current amiga
hardware...
| Do you really think we would want to
| announce this license which we have had since DECEMBER 1999 if we
| didn't think there would be hardware capable of running it?
It sound like it is, because the only argument against that is "we
WILL have a PCI board that WILL eventually have decent 3d drivers"...
| The transfer speeds on the Elbox PCI slots will be around 22MB/S on
| 1200 systems and more on the A4000 system.
22 MB/S is around twice the 10 MB/s i quoted as speed for the ZIII, so
my estimation was right INDEED; whereas someone liked to point me
wrong... Still it's pitifully slow. How do I am supposed to add the
PCI system on an A4000? The only expansion ports available are the CPU
slot and the ZIII bus; the former is unlikely (on the A4000 the cpu
slot is always occupied by a CPU card), the latter would be
pointless...
| This will be more than sufficient for use with modern graphics
| cards such as the Voodoo 3/4/5, Riva TNT2 etc. The Permedia 2 was the
| problem. The problem has been removed.
The problem is STILL here, until someone provides the drivers, and
with that bus speed there may still be problems; besides I have seen
atleast 3 other "announcements" of PCI slot upgrades for the Amigas
and still I have to see one reach the market stage.

| For the moment, it's very hard to sign up licences for great games,

This is for sure. I'm not saying it's easy to do.
| When we have an opportunity to sign such a great game, we don't
| think twice.
But the game will be pathetic on the amiga hardware, and there's more
or less nothing you can do to avoid that.
| Moreover, this is by porting such demanding games that
| we can push the hardware development on the Amiga.
As far as we can see, it does not seem so. There was only one company
actually producing a PPC expansion for the amiga and it is not closed.
| Remember also that we will support the new Amiga (i.e. Amie) which
| will run on new and powerful hardware.
When it will run...
| With the BoXeR and now the Mediator PCI bus, we can do great things
| on the Classic Amiga.
None of the two is currently available. As far as we know the boxer
may still be very distant in the future; the Mediator PCI itself gives
nothing unless someone commits in producing quality drivers.

A good test to perform goes as follows:
In Heretic 2 (or the demo), shrink the screen-size down to as small as you can get it. (Resolution is more or less irrelevant with this test).
Note how many frames you get. This is the framerate you will get with a modern graphics card like the Voodoo 3.
On a Cyberstorm PPC/233 Heretic 2 gets around 100-110 fps in geometry but the Permedia 2 is only able to squeeze out a paltry 20 fps in 640x480 due to it's low fillrate.

In reply to Comment 3 (Chris Roccati):
3D cards use far less data to display because all the textures are in the graphic card memory. Basicly you are only sending wire frames with some extra info, so the transfer to the video card is far less important.
A VooDoo 3 card will at least produce 24 FPS in 1024 x 768 on my 603 e / 240 MHz because I get this in 400 x 300 on the Permedia 2. You don't send any extra information in 1024 x 768 than you do in 400 x 300. That's how 3D works!!!!
When I had a 233 MMX with VooDoo 2 cards in SLI mode I got 28 FPS in 640 x 480, 800 x 600 and 1024 x 768. The only thing that is important is the fill rate( that is absolutely pathetic on the Permedia 2) and that all the needed 3D functions are also available( which the Permedia 2 also doesn't have). Because they have to be emulated right now for the Permedia 2 and 3DFX have a reputation of getting somewhat better speed than other manufacturers, the frame rate is actually likely to rise somewhat more. You actually don't need more than 30 FPS to play a game correctly. We are not far off.

Remco

If you actually did read the announcement you'd see HOW misleading the specs are:
"* Transfer rates between PCI cards up to 132 MB/s" in practice this only happens
when two pci cards talk to each other -- more or less never. "T* ransfer rates between
A1200 motherboard and PCI cards up to two times faster than between A4000 and ZORRO

Actually, you are wrong. The Q2 engine has actual additions that will make it
faster for some things than the Quake 1 engine. This additional performance
is used for more geometry usually, so it *appears* to be slower. But it added
visibility portals, which greatly reduce the number of polygons in the PVS.
It *does* feature more advanced model animation stuff, so that you can
interpolate between frames ("morph targets"), but then Heretic II uses
its own model system (flex models) based on skeletal animation.

The games won't run on that early 90's processor, which would possibly bring you 75-100 euro used, but rather than upgrade, you'd shell out hundreds of Euro for a top-end PC which won't be worth 50 Euro this time next year? I'm sure, somehow, this makes sense.

: I'm glad you understand. There's no such amiga...
So why not work to overcome this delima? You still have yet to even step up to the plate of reality. If you wine and complain enough do you honestly think that some developer of PPC boards (the current number is three after Phase5 went out, but none are available at this time due to an industry wide shortage of a specific chip for the bridge as well as a finished non-beta 68K emulator) is going to feel sorry for you and give you a PPC board just to shut you up, more than likely not.
: The Q2 engine is more COMPLEX. This means it will be slower. You get it?
You don't read the facts obviously. If you remember when the Quake2 engine was in final beta, there was a review done on GameSpy.com (probably still there) where they say that the Quake2 engine is much more complex however it offers greater speed improvements. Using a system running Quake and Quake2 there will not be any frame loss from the extra improvements since the code has been cleaned up and refined. Yeah, more complex, like you said, but you should be asking "This means it will be slower?" rather than making a statement.
I'm going to seriously beg of you, read the facts before you go off spouting nonsense into umpteen different directions like a kansas city fountain. If you have something that you think might be a great rebutle, research it before you post it. If you don't research, you might end up debating with people like me who know a bit about it. Class dismissed.
: Yeah, but how much I do need to spend? I have an A4000 with a with 40MHz
: 68040 (warpengine). I never got a PPC card because there was no software
: worth spending 500+ euro on the PPC upgrade.
BEHOLD, the truth is spoken!!! You are affraid that if you spend all this money on your Amiga system that it will not be what you expected right? Well then, now I know your motive. Let's look at it this way. If you spend about $2000 on an average computer system with a Pentium III 750MHz, you're going to get some really cool system... for the next year or so at least. After about two years, that system will be worth squat, maybe $50 (according to the Orion BlueBook http://www.orionbluebook.com). On the other hand, I've got my Amiga Tower system with a PIV, CSPPC (had it for over three years now) and so on that I can still sell for well over $2000 on ebay or any of the other auctions out there. The point being is that the computer system that you purchase is an investment rather than a toy so it's best to get the most out of it.
: Tell me, are WipeOut and Heretic worth the cost?
[shaking head in disgust] you have a lot to learn...

I think I'll have to disagree with you again, Chris. The only way we are going to survive is also implementing the rule: Your machine isn't fast enough, UPGRADE!!!!!!
We can't expect 3D games to run on the 68k processor because it has to little processing power. An OS or a program is very much different then a game in terms of processing power. OK, on the Amiga then. The Amiga seems to be the only OS able to work on a processor without much processing power.
But you are right about the fact that hardware is not available and when it is, there are waiting times of many months. That has to change.
I have a BlizzardPPC 68060/50 603e/240 with BVision and Prelude 1200. So, my machine has allready cost buckets of money, but it is the only way to keep up.
The I don't want to upgrade mentality allready put a brake on the Amiga development about 8 years ago.

-I simply don't understand why these people keep following the stupid idea
Amiga users with PPC cards are stupid? Hyperion is stupid? What else could have possibly meant? That is what a troll does, stirs things up for personal pleasure.
- we already have quake running at 10 fps.
10fps?!? Oh yeah, 10fps on your 040. No one else in the Amiga community plays Quake @ 10fps.
- We will have shogo (probably slower).
Another bizzare attack on Hyperion. I doubt they would be allowed to release it if it was slower than ~20 fps in a decent screenmode.
- Do we actually NEED to see how pathetically slow will be soldier of fortune?
Hyperion is not a 1 man show, they are a class act. They will be providing the Warp3d drivers for PCI based GFX cards that THEY confirmed right here is not Vapor! With Hyperion management telling you directly what PCI GFX cards *WILL* be available and they *WILL* write the Warp3d drivers for it, you still keep the negativity and bashing.
Last comment from me. If you really, really hate the state of the Amiga and have zero faith in new developments... Then by all means sink your computing dollars only into that Windows box. Sell that A4000 to someone who will put it to good use. If you just happen to be in a bad mood today, go out and have a beer. That usually brings me up:-)

Who started writting "Then buy a freakin PC!!", "constant negative jaw yapping",
"I can't put you on my kill list. Go home."?
1) never claimed they were not able to deliver. My point was about the fact that the game
is too heavy for the current amigas (and the only reply i receved where about
a yet to be released PCI adapter card and yet to be released Voodoo drivers)
4) comeon, nobody buys a 500 euro PPC card just to play a game!
5) Hyperion is not a kitchen developer, the licenses for the games do
cost a lot! A single user does not change their balance ...
6) same as 4)
| See the pattern here?
No, I don't.
| No matter how much you complain, whine, and insult people won't stop progress here.
I don't complain, I have exposed a doubt. I don't whine, I just confirmed my points.
Where did I insult? I only got insulted...

I could care less if someone has a different opinion than myself! Puuhleaze! This isn't about a difference of opinion, it is about your trolling posts!
Facts:
1)Hyperion is porting extremely high quality games to the Amiga. They are not making hollow product announcements, they are actually delivering!
2)PPC Amiga users are actually buying these quality games.
3)Hyperion makes money, hires more employees, makes more games.
4)No more chicken/egg problem. High quality PPC software exists, demand for PPC accelerators & better gfx cards sky rockets. Any company who can deliver(DCE, Elbox, Met@box etc) makes a killing.
5)The market actually grows instead of shrinking. (How is that you say? PPC owners rarely if ever leave the platform(look at ebay). Every single new PPC board sold from this point on increases the market directly and noticably.)
6)Phase5 sold ~10,000 PPC cards without there being a single program available to run on it. Whoever is the first company to release the NG PPC card will sell much more than that because software is available.
7)The more PPC cards sold, the more companies produce PPC software.
See the pattern here? No matter how much you complain, whine, and insult people won't stop progress here. Hyperion is the most comendable Amiga based company in existance, they are doing more to support and expand the market than Amiga Inc themselves!
Once again kudos Hyperion!!! Keep giving us a reason to own a PPC card!!

I am only commenting about a REAL problem regarding the development of amiga games.
The amiga is not the PC, where the game company simply says "your machine is not fast
enough, UPGRADE!"; the amount of hardware upgrades available are extremely limited,
not to mention very costly. The discussion steams from the fact that the requirements for
the current games are not met even from the most high end systems...

The Q2 engine is more COMPLEX. This means it will be slower. You get it?
| I mean, 800x600 at around 20FPS for Heretic2 only due to the limitation of the fill rate of the Permedia2 chip...
| what's it going to be like with the Voodoo chips? The Voodoo1 has a fill rate about three times that.
Yeah, but how much I do need to spend?
| How bout we get all of the Amiga programmers together and make a game specifically for your

I have an A4000 with a with 40MHz 68040 (warpengine). I never got a PPC card because
there was no software worth spending 500+ euro on the PPC upgrade.

| When we have an opportunity to sign such a great game, we don't
| think twice.
But the game will be pathetic on the amiga hardware, and there's more
or less nothing you can do to avoid that.
Actually, we do have brains in our heads and we think before signing up everything. Yes, yes ! :)
| Moreover, this is by porting such demanding games that
| we can push the hardware development on the Amiga.
As far as we can see, it does not seem so. There was only one company
actually producing a PPC expansion for the amiga and it is not closed.
You certainly wanted to say "now closed". But there's still DCE, Escena, Metabox and now Elbox bringing PCI to the Amiga. It's far from nothing.
| Remember also that we will support the new Amiga (i.e. Amie) which
| will run on new and powerful hardware.
When it will run...
It already runs in a SDK version, which also is far from nothing.
| With the BoXeR and now the Mediator PCI bus, we can do great things
| on the Classic Amiga.
None of the two is currently available. As far as we know the boxer
may still be very distant in the future; the Mediator PCI itself gives
nothing unless someone commits in producing quality drivers.
So you're right. Let's not anticipate the future and produce nothing so that when these products are available there's no software supporting them and no more Amigans, pissed off and having left the Amiga.
No. Hyperion wants to anticipate, to bring the Amiga the most chances to recover strong hardware and software possibilities.
And the fight is now, not in a few months or years...

Quake at 10FPS?!! Get some current hardware! I'm running it at 30FPS+
in 640x480 on my BVision (That's the GL version of Quake). As for
Wipeout being nicer on PSX : No way! The PSX version is in low-res,
and the demo of W2097 (I sadly only have the demo-version) runs very
smoothly here, I can't see any glitches.
I'm looking forward to getting my hands of one of those Mediators and
a Voodo card so I can play Heretic II as it's really supposed to be.
(The demo is still quite playable here with 603-210Mhz + BVision and
CGX 4).

I actually bought Wipeout 2097 just to support them, I don't care if my permedia 2 don't make the game worth playing compared to the psx version.
I intend to do the same with Hyperions games, they are trying hard for us
and in the end we will get great hardware and I would very much like to see
these companies still doing games for us.
This is the important thing here really, make it worth it for them to support
us...
