C-Net's news.com has an interesting article about a new language Microsoft is developing called C# (pronounced C-Sharp) that has many things in common with Java and is intended for Internet programming. They also talk about a Virtual Machine that can can run many different programming languages on any hardware that Microsoft is working on. Damn, this annoys me. This is typical Microsoft politics: If there is a standard for something, make another one, make sure you'll need Microsoft products to use it properly, and then when it is widespread enough, claim you invented the whole thing. I wonder if PC suppliers who don't deliver this "new big thing" from MS with their PC's will be penalized with more expensive licences for Windows... Grrr... :-(

Just Microsoft re-inventing the wheel, and probably failing at it - again...

Let's hope they can't mislead the world once again, and anymore...

There at it again. The law suit is not even over and they are well on their way to get another one. And then if they are sued they play the innocent little kids. I hope that high super duper supreme court will make the punishment even harder then Jackson did.

But it is not platform-independent, and will never be, because that would be a contrast to M$-strategy to tie the world to windows.
I really hope the supreme court will hurry up.

In reply to Comment 5 (Torsten):
I don't understand why Micrsoft likens this C-flat thing to Java. We all know that
they will never ever allow it to be even somewhat cross-platform, so to use it you
require Windows, or ".Net" or whatever they call the NG Windows stuff now. It should
be likened more to VBscript as a web language, but is very different than Java as
Java has gone far beyond web pages, and is able to be proted to any platform that someone
wants to do it for. (Too bad the Amiga folks backed out due to financial reasons)
C-flat is of no interest to me AT ALL. Will it run on my Amiga? Not in a million, trillion
years. Elate? Equally as doubtful, as MS didn't make that either. QNX? heh. And I
don't plan on using Windows, so I'll never have a use for this new language.

This deserves to fall flat on its face. Once again Microsoft can't
take that they represent an old era in computing, which has now passed
and is leaving them behind. Can you ever see Windows running on your
PDA, WAP phone, console, etc. etc.?
All in all, M$ should get their just deserts......

Why do they put a virtual machine on top of their OS (as they don't will support others) ? Is the damn Windows not lame enough ?

In reply to Comment 5 (Torsten):
I think they mean a SW platform that is HW independent. That wouldn't necessarily mean that they abandon their windows domination strategy, not at all, it could very well mean that a new version of windows (programmed in this HW-independent java-like language) would run on any hardware. Seen from their point of view it's a good strategy - it follows the same ideas as Java, Tao/Amiga (and others). And by developing an own Java-like standard (with a HW independent programming envireonment and a Virtual machine) they won't be in the hands of M$ hostile companies like Sun, and they won't have to pay any license fees or royaltees.
This is absoluteley a serious threat to Java and Tao/Amiga, seen from a business strategic point of view (which is the only way to look at it from). Even if a Tao/Amiga solutions sees the day of light, it would have diffeculties to compete with a similar M$ solution, even if it is technologically superior, because "windows" is world standard and a VERY strong trademark. Look at the palmtop market. It has excellent non-M$ OS:es and applications, but still some palmtop developers chooses to use Windows CE as their OS. Why? Because it's technologically better? No, it's because they know that all their customers will feel familiar in the windows envireonment (since windows IS the world standard in OS:es), and that the windows trademark will help them selling their products.
This should not be ignored!

Everytime M$ misses a boat they claim the past as their future.
They would have everyone believe they inovate but their patent
history tells the real story.

Sounds like M$ is still doing what they do best; copy, steal, and or buy-out any threatening technology that appears in the market. The scary fact that developers write apps for WINCE, even though there are better alternatives available leads me to believe that no matter how crappy M$ C# may turn out to be, it will most likely succeed commercially.
As I recall, M$ was also very adept at slowing/squashing potential threats by 'announcing' products that were vapor. Claiming their product would be much better than the newly emerging (condensed) technology that rival company X is releasing, essentially keeping their current legions of lemmings from considering the new tech until M$ eventually (if ever), employs it.
Oh well, we should've seen this coming. Who knows? Maybe C# will turn out to be as cool and innovative as direct 3D, OLE/ActiveX, or even BOB!!! Aaaaaaaaaagh!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Very little M$ has ever released has been done by them from scratch... MS-DOS wasn't, Windows wasn't (most of it was ripped off some other GUI concept anyways) and a truckload of other stuff they've released or integrated into Winblows over the years. Oooh... I'd like to take that Bill Gates, sit him down in front of me, and give him a BIG piece of my mind. They're so goddamn pretentious I could throw up! MAN!!!!! :)
