Bill McEwen writes: I will be on Digital Jam on CNN tomorrow night. This is a live broadcast from 4:30pm to 5:30pm Pacific Time. Now I am only to have 3 to 6 minutes on the show, and they will not confirm that actual time till tomorrow morning, but it is the first television coverage for us. Brilliant! I sincerely hope I don't miss it (I'm not sure if I can get
access to CNN). Hey, why don't someone grab it, digitize it, and
upload it to somewhere on the Internet? Does anybody who reads
this have the equipment? If it's not too huge, maybe I could give it
temporary storage on my homepage.

To watch it on the net just go to http://cnnfn.com/services/fnonair/video/dj/
They will post a copy of the show sometime tonight. Now... if someone who actually watches it could just tell us at what point Bill appears!
P.S. It is a Windows Media Player stream... ugh!

Typhical business types. I hate it when M$ bribes companies
to use only their stuff, irregardles of the technologies
realative merit! I will not download Windows Media Player
out of principle (even if they support Mac OS). Screw Em!
I'll catch it in NTSC video or something.

In reply to Comment 5 (MAS):
Would you rather it be in RealPlayer format? :)
Actually, every streaming video format out there tends to suck, but ASF is popular because it's actually one of the best formats out there- tiny, fast, happens to be a Microsoft format (which means Windows boxes tend to support it instantly, and unfortunately means everyone except perhaps Mac users are screwed)...
Seriously, though- compare ASF with QuickTime, Realplayer, and MPEG. I can get about the same quality from 700k of ASF as I would from 4mb of MPEG2 or whatever the usual .mpg standard is. Quicktime would have high quality, but probably be even bigger (and force me to use its annoying player interface :)) I'd surely be whining if I were back under OS/2, but ASF is, unfortunately, the best way to suck video down a 56k modem right now.

Hrm. Followed the link from the cnnfn website, and appear to be unable to get to the digitized video stream. Bummer. Was hoping to see something nice from Bill smack in the middle of the ol' mainstream media. Mebbe I should flip on the tube and see if they're planning on rerunning it...

Just watched the feed....
(2nd reel, middle section)
Additional guest... Dick VanDyke.
I think it went over _very_ well.
They may have gotten over the 3-6 minute
assumed limit.
Will done Bill, and much thanks to Dick!!

I think we're clogging their servers???
I got in early and skipped around the show
trying to find Bill. I finally found him,
and he said "A-1200", then I couldn't get back. ;-(
I use Windows Media Player to listen to
online "radio" stations too, sorry to say,
it has the best sound too! (tried 'em all)

In reply to Comment 8 (Keith Brown):
Pretty good interview, and a bit better than that talking head from the SPA (or wherever he was from) beforehand... But now's not the time to get into a rant on software licensing practices.*
Anyhow, my only complaint is that the interviewer seemed a bit more interested in talking to Dick than to Bill, and you can't fault Bill for that.
Would've been nice to weasel in some gadgets- if Bill had a Dreamcast and a laptop that he could've gestured at, and one of those phones to hold up as he mentioned it...
...but that'll come in future interviews, I'm sure. Considering the time slot wasn't even set until the morning, sounds like nobody on either end had a whole lot of time to prepare.
The installed user base was mentioned a lot, but that wasn't much correllated to the crossplatform plans (probably because the lack of a 680x0 port for now isn't something anyone wants to brag about). It might be a bit mean-spirited, but if that issue comes up again, I'd really like to hear "We're doing for our installed base what Apple promised theirs years ago- a completely new system, founded upon modern technologies. Unlike Apple, we aren't playing catch-up with our system, we're paving new ground."
Of course, I might be the only one out there who thinks OS X is long overdue, and doesn't think that Aqua is a "revolutionary new interface." Whee, candy-colored butttons and controls that are even harder to manipulate with a mouse...
-
*Hint: Many of the people pirating apps (as opposed to games, which are a short lived commodity targeted at the youth market) are kids who have no hope of affording the software, and would otherwise never gain the skills to use it (and hopefully become a paying customer, or a reason for their employer to buy a license). "Daaaaad! Can I have two grand for an AutoCAD license?" At least Amiga doesn't have to worry as much, since AMIE'll be a preload, or (hopefully) ship with first-generation applications software [as in "I just bought this new game from Hyperion, and it comes with this thing called 'AMIE' on the CD to run it, weird!"]. Just the latter doesn't lead to the DirectX situation, though- go to install a program with a lame installer and watch it accidentally downgrade your already-installed AMIE by a few version numbers...

I put way too much information into my comment postings. Anyhow, what I did want to include up there was this:
Good job, Bill!
Sometimes I get so heavily into critiquing that I forget to say that I do like the object of my criticism! I'm sorta like BASF- I don't hate the whatever, I just want to make it better :)

I Watched it, I liked it and well done.
BUT, wasn't there a confusion when the presenter tried to link Tranmeta with Amiga saying both technologies are doing the same thing? Although Bill answered saying that Trasnmeta chips can be supported Amiga, I thought the presenter tried to mislead people into thinking that Trasnmeta and Amiga are doing the same thing, where in fact they're doing the opposite. When will people diffrentiate Software from Hardware? Trasnmeta is developing a Hardware to run many type of softwares, while Amiga is developing a Software that'll run on many Hardwares. Hence from Mobile phones to servers.
And where did they get that an AmigaOS needs 5MB of hard disk space? The minimum is 1 DD floppy disk (880KB), where no other "mainstream" GUI OS can do.

I watched it too, but I felt in the end that the CNN host wasn't taking things too seriously. That's one of my personal fears: That Amiga will not be taken seriously.

Actually I think that Bill an Dick did a a very good job. The interview was quite informative. Although the interviewer didn't seem to take the whole thing very serious.

Anything but Micro$oft (ABM for short). WMP is probably only the
"best" on Windoze boxes. I doubt it is any better on the few other
platforms those bastards can trouble themselves to support. No W(I)MP
for me, thank you. Give me QT/Real Media/MPG or any other technology
that M$ doesn't own. CNN/FN needs to stop pandering to people who
never touch anything but wintel stuff.

For those that are interested. I've posted a very low bitrate (actually streamable on 33.6) recording of the interview. There are no graphics since in WMP you really couldn't tell what was going on anyway. In any case, for those that do not use the PC, this is for you to enjoy

I read the fast transcription of the interview - all the same as in the New York times. Dick van Dyke - a former truck driver - we heard this before. And we heard many of the great TAOS - but where is amiga: Did I understand correctly, when Bill called TAOS the new Os of Amiga?
Bot there ist ONE new aspect - other have the same plan, applications, running on desktops and on cellular phones, hardware-independent - even Microsoft has this strategy (Microsoft.Net). What can Amiga do better?

In reply to Comment 12 (Haider Tuaima):
Haider, I believe it was- to clear up some of your questions:
The Transmeta comparison was actually a good thing to bring up, but unfortunately, Bill only had a chance to get a word in edgewise...
Transmeta is either a heck of a lot like Taomiga, or they're total opposites. I like to think that they're doing the same thing from two different directions, but that the VP will win out in the end. Of course, the best-engineered solution has often failed, but Crusoe is going to be looking pretty useless if you can run all your applications on something even less power hungry, like a StrongARM design.
The 5MB figure (I thought I heard 3, but it's been 24 hours since I heard the thing) comes from the size of the new software, AFAIK, which is pretty lithe compared to Windows (~200mb+, now?), OS/2 (~120mb, the last generation's standard for bloat before NT/Win2k showed us how to do it right), or even Linux (a modern Linux distro will grow to around 50mb after you install XFree86 and a window manager)... Or I may be off here, and he might've been referring to the size of OS3.5, which is apparently big enough that it doesn't come on floppies. Like I said above, we need to get a little more distance between Classic Amiga and AMIE, if for no other reason so that people can know what the heck others are talking about :)

mpu is the same as mp3, the only difference is that the local server is supposed to see the mimetype and set the file as a digital stream. Unfortunately my ISP decided that digital streaming is not a good thing and have removed the option to stream the file. The cool part about the Amiga though, if you know what you are doing, start the download and then just start playing the unfinished file. Should work like a charm. Surprized me to see that Be didn't recognize the header information... odd.

In reply to Comment 5 (MAS):
The windows media player is not even MS technology - the base code was created by by VivoActive video a few years back and while the video ain't great is does produce excellent audio quality when that option is selected. The technology was purchased by RealPlayer, because it was kicking the pants off of their real audio player
nd now they've essentially buried the technology IMHO so no one hardly knows it's around.
Vivo video is really quite cool. You can create a 320x240 video segment with
FM radio quality audio and only use about 600k or so. That's really very efficient for video.
I love the Amiga but that dowsn't mean I have to trash other formats, particularly format types that are cool to make my points.

::The windows media player is not even MS technology-
Almost nothing that M$ makes was originally M$ technology-
why reinvent the "wheel" when you can buy it (or steal it)
from some other company. Sounds like that was what the Real
folks should have done. The point is M$ either owns it (or
liscenses it - don't know which) now, and put their name on
it. At that point I can no longer support the technology,
irregardles of its supposed supperiority. They give it away
with Windoze and the vast majority of the public accept it
because they neither know or care what is best (I believe
it comes already installed as part of Windoze on most new
wintel systems).
This presents companies like CNN with the usual M$ delima.
Be assimilated or support more than one technology. They made
their choice and should be roundly criticized for it. Like
I said, Screw 'Em!

at a very low bitrate, so that is only to be expected...:7
