I'll leave for Lithuania tomorrow morning, and only return on Monday evening. That means no updates until then, possibly even longer.

The quality of ANN's news service has been going down a lot lately, and I'm the one to blame. Please accept my sincerest apologies, but please also understand that a number of things are preventing me from having the right motivation to update this site - or use a computer at all, for that matter. I've always been very open about this site and what is going on behind the scenes, and right now I can just say that I've been wondering lately for how long I can keep ANN going in its current state, or whether I shouldn't just abandon it altogether. Granted, I'm still making enough money to cover my Internet connection and server bills, but that's pretty much the only reason that's left. And even then, the revenue is going down all the time, and will probably barely reach 100$ this month.

But you're probably all enjoying the summer away from your computers anyway, and won't care too much about this.

This is a Great site and a very useful resource for Amiga Info.
But I've never seen a Webmaster whine so much!
Keep up the good work.

It is a shame you feel as you do, Christian. I check this site on a regular basis,
and would hate to see another brick in the Amiga house be taken out. I do not know
how many can be taken before the whole thing collapses.. : ((
Anyway, thanks for the efforts on behalf or our Amiga!

Amen, and spades to the comment about spamming that loser.
It always amazes me that there those kinds of people in the world,
and that someone has not quietly placed them on a little island
all by themselves in the far Southern Pacific where they could be
so ultra negative each other.
I am insulted that someone who is obviously as caring as you
are, would be dissed by a total sociopath.
Once again, thanks for your excellent efforts!!!

Christian I would like to thank you for everything you have done with ANN, it's one of the few sites I visit every time I fire up a web browser,
although I just discovered it a few months ago.
I would hate to see this site close, but that's your call. If you feel you just have to go on with your life and turn this page,
then by all means, do so.
I can't find anything to say that's not already been said here, so I just say that "ANN's been a great place and offered much to everyone,
so thank you, Christian".
I hope you find some motivation to keep this place going (and improving).
Best wishes, whatever you decide...
Dimitris

I hope the site keeps going - delegate some control if you have to - let someone else do some work for you!
The nice thing about ANN vs CAN is that this is "interactive", although sadly some people have abused this lately.
It can get depressing when computers "play up" and the Amiga scene is still too quiet to be "amazing" - hang in there, take a holiday or something!!! ;)
All the best!

I read ANN everyday and you're providing a great service to the Amiga
community. I hope you'll keep ANN going, but take care of
yourself...slack off and let it go some if you need too.
kindest regards, Brent Meeker

you're right in your decisions whatsoever, BUT !
The Amiga's heydaya are kinda comin` back ...
The MS days are (almost) off ...
And both for clearly good reasons, ain't it ?
Maybe you could -just- try to stand and resist then,
or if not, don't PLEASE say goodbye forever, will you ?
The Amiga is =still= alive due to two main reasons (above all else) :
a. herself and her abilities
b. YOU, ME, and all other people like US !
I.e., the ones who have been waiting, in a loyal, truthful, hopeful, and resourceful manner ...
Maybe you could just try to reduce the size of `ann' a bit -temporarily of course- till the day `we'll be `big' again ?!?
Maybe you could raise some funds by asking people to `donate' samll amounts to keep `ann' going ?
I gather that there are more than 2000 Amigans visiting your website, the majority of them doing this many times daily.
I don't really know how much money is needed to keep a business like this
going, but lets say if all this people could send 1 dollar a month, then maybe
it would be of some aid, wouldn't it ?
There are still many individuals and groups doing something `Amiganistic' one
way or the other : websites like `ann', magazines, BBS`s, and so on. The
number's really great still, and if one or more `die', there are yet so many
others to `trod on the road', but this doesn't mean that if someone declares his going, the rest will just say farewell, does it ?
A dollar or two a month, is really nothing for even the most jobless poorest of the `ann' browser Amigans, but it can (I hope !) help `ann' keep going !!?
Anyone to enlighten me more on that ?

In reply to Comment 21 (David Cox):
"..., every time I bugger up my Amiga setup (a frequent occurance - I have a
natural talent!) I wonder if it would'nt be better to go with a PC of(or) Mac (then
I look at the cost of the S/W I'd have to buy!)"
Yes my dear `old' Amigan user, but the differnece doesn't just end (or start) there : with a PC (and even a Mac), you not only pay a lot more on everything (including the S/W), but you'd also lose the indescribably utter joy of operating a great OS and device, i.e., the Amiga ...

This site is one of the main news sites I visit a lot. The site is also mentioned in a dutch amiga magazine (Amiga Scene). Here's a little part of what the magazine says: (rough translation)
The Amiga News Network is also a site dedicated to Amiga news. The fun part of the site is that we can respond and discuss news-items with other readers. Also some famous people in the Amiga world give their opinion once and a while.

Hi Christian,
All the best whatever you decide.
ANN is the place i've always gone to for Amiga news, it will be sorely missed if you do decide to close it by Amigans one and all.
Take care,
Trebs

Hi Christian!
Having read all of these responses I hope you see all the positive responces from users all over. I work as a PC (uck...) supporter at a large workplace, but one of the first things I do is check ann.lu every day. Afterwards I usually download some things, linked from your site, and after work my first priority is to Power on my Amiga and try out the new software. I would hate to see your site disappear, like cucug.org/amiga! Anyway, whatever happens thanks for a great place!!!

Your decision is understandable given that a website of this quality will always take a large amount of time to maintain.
Also I think it is common for a news resource of this kind to be frequently, but briefly, visited by its users. This must make the maintainance of ANN an often thankless task.
In case you do decide to close the site I would like to take my oppertunity now to personally thank you for all the work you have put into ANN and wish you well for the future.
Thanks
Dirk

I will miss Ann.lu, I come here every day. Just putting in my 2.5 cents. :O)
Sorry you have to go, if that is the case, but I understand your position. Well at least we have Amiga.org, and BeShare to keep the Amiga conversations rolling, not to say of course that I won't miss Ann.lu, because I will, it has been my morning breakfast everyday since it began!
THankx!

Christian,
Since it's inception ANN has been my starting point every day
for all things Amiga.
First I check recent updates on ANN and review the comments
of stories I find interesting. Next, I'm off to the pages that
link to ANN. Amiga.org is usually my next stop followed by
Czech Amiga News, amiga-news.de and Moo Bunny if I have time.
Back in the beginning I remember when you polled users about
the ANN masthead graphic and showed us a number of choices.
I sent you a note back stating my choice and my reasons and you
sent me a thoughtful reply. I was, and continue to be, impressed
with your inclusion of reader input into design and content of
your page. I have also found your candid honesty to be quite
refreshing. Even in the midst of occasional controversy you have
maintained a level of professionalism rarely matched.
Your service-mindedness has been a hallmark of ANN. I will miss
the page if you can't maintain it anymore. However, I will
understand if you have to close up shop for new adventures. You
and other stalwart news services have helped the Amiga community
through a very difficult time of uncertainty and transition.
I want to thank you for that.
Sincerely, Dan Newsome

Thanks for ANN. I have been reading it for about the past 1 and a half years and I think it is a top site that is well designed. I'm sure most would understand if you feel you no longer have the time to continue to develop it and the memory of your site will be no worse for it.

It seems to me, that with all these people wanting ANN to
stay open, you could easily find a couple of people to
do general mantainence on it, such as moderation etc.
you could keep as much control as you wanted, and hand
the rest over to trusted and experienced people.
As they say, 2 heads are better than one, and it seems
to me that there are a lot more than two heads here that
are willing to support and help out with keeping ANN
as one of the premier news sites for the amiga.
However, if you do decide that you want to quit with your
site, please consider letting someone take it over,
possibly under some sort of contractual agreement, that
would mean that we still get the ANN we all know and love,
and you get the freedom to do whatever you want, safe in
the knowledge that ANN lives on.
If it does go, I for one will be sad to see the demise of
another amiga institution, just like AWD, CU and AF before
it.
Good luck in whatever you decide.

Hey, folks! Why don't we all chip in and buy Christian a new hard drive?
Whether or not he continues ANN I think we owe him at least that.
Maybe a nice 10 or 20 gig HD. Why not?
I'll throw in 10 bucks. Or maybe 20 if there aren't many takers.
C'mon, whadya say?
