France wants to drop Microsoft OS in favour of Linux 'cause of it's open source nature. The French government is realy serious about this. This article explains what's happening. Maybe this is not directly affecting Amiga, but I do think it affects it indirectly since the goal is non-Microsoft OS, and the fact that Amiga can be happily hosted by Linux. 8^)

Think again about the ramifications of this - Tao *may* run on top of Linux, but they are looking to ditch any software they do not have the source to...
Tao is not open source, and therefore would not be permissable under the original reasons for going over to Linux, which was for all government computers to run open source to make sure no NSA style backdoors could be included...
If the general public is also moved over to open source, fine, but I doubt that it would be legal to restrict M$ from selling their products there.

Then home users might want to float Tao/Amiga on top of it.
But you will probably be able to host Tao/Amiga just as well on Mac or
Windows, so it will probably make little difference to Amiga.
How will all these French authorities manage when they need software
which isn't on Linux, such as a video editor?

How odd, I have read on another occasion that the intended OS would be OpenBSD. Seems like the natural choice to me, too, considering the more open BSD licence and the security aspects.

I never saw the amiga good enough emulated on any os
Linux can happily hosted by AmigaOS that's true and tested
with Geekgadget
Linux sux and his much too heavy and too complex : never a user
will know the use off all stuff in the os like on amiga
Linux is a toy and not an os

Ok, any country dropping Winblows over another OS has my vote but LINUX. Come, on.
LINUX has had it's best days. Open source maybe great but also has some restrictions.
I have used different versions of Linux and am still not confinced. Too slow, too long to start and uses too much memory. All I hate in a OS and why I have an Amiga.

There is a non-linear video editor for Linux. Its called Broadcast 2000. You can check it out at http://heroine.linuxave.net/bcast2000.html . So the French can edit to their hearts content.
