Gary Peake posted the updates below on the Open Amiga list to clarify some issues. Amongst other things Amiga's licensing scheme is under review and there will be no fees for application developers this year.

Sorry for the delay in posting any updates here. I have just returned from a 2500 plus mile trip in a Rental truck (24 footer) dragging my family and a 3 bedroom house full of furniture to Snoqualmie from Texas.

If I missed any posts, please feel free to send them my way.

Ports

If possible, can anyone currently porting an app or utility or whatever please send me an email? I would like to establish an online database for registered developers so these apps can be listed and thus avoid any duplications that may take place.

I would also like to announce that Douglas McLaughlin will be writing his own version of ICQ for the new AmiVerse.

License Fees

Contrary to what the SDK says, there will be NO license fees on any applications, tools, or ports in the year 2000. We are reviewing this policy for 2001 and beyond and as soon as I have the info I will post it here.

Also, there is and never will be license fees on open source apps or tools.

Developer Web Site

Sorry about the delay with the web site. Part of the delay was waiting to see which ways we would go with certain web based applications and another part of the delay has been getting my family situation worked out and all of my family up here to the great Northwest.

That accomplished, the web site updates will begin in earnest now. Stay tuned for more developments there.

Apologies if I have misread the situation here..
But it looks to me that freeware developers will possibly have to pay Amiga for the privilege next year! (that is unless they wanna give away the source)
As a developer on the classic Amiga, I like to keep all source to myself, but make a point of making my programs freeware.
If Amiga do change their minds next year, and freeware coders do get charged (on top of the cost of the SDK), then it`ll have made my mind up about which platform I want to migrate to next!
I dont wanna start a flame, cos I maybe/quite possibly totally wrong..in which case press releases from Amiga should be a bit clearer!
I really hope I am wrong, as otherwise I this could sink the new amiga before it really has a chance to shine.

I can't believe that in a million years Amiga would ever charge anyone a fee for freeware, shareware or the like. I'm sure this was just an omision in Gary's statement.

you may all want to re read garys post and previous posts. there was never any suggestion that freeware would be subject to royalties.

No mention of what if happens if it`s freeware but you keep the source..

As I understood the licensing model (from some of the initial interviews/press releases; I'm not a devkit owner), the royalty fees were for developers of solutions that /include/ AMIE, not for people developing /for/ the platform. Is this incorrect?
I can't see Amiga being dumb enough to charge developers for the "privelege" of developing software for their system; it's what killed OS/2, after all. However, you guys are talking about things as if they are...

I believe that it will end up with a fee if the profit of an AMIE app is pretty high. I don't believe that Amiga Inc. would EVER charge for freeware.
The problem is the AMIE system is actually also a development platform for multiformat apps and games and that it seems like Amiga is doing a lot to ensure better and better development tools in the future. If a games company is making a game using AMIE and Hyperions up-comming 3D engine, and then using Amiga Foundation Layer distributes it to PC, Mac, Dreamcast and so on wouldn't it be fair if he paid a fee to Amiga?
Amiga won't make money from hardware as all computers will be able to run AMIE! Where should they get their money?
